I am glad I listened to this one, as I'm not sure I would have managed to complete the novel because there were parts of the work that were slow and not really anything much happening, but the Audible was very easy to listen to whilst I lay in bed or did things around the flat. It meant that I heard everything and didn't miss any part of the memoirs. The narrator was excellent and was able to read with clarity, easy to listen.
I recommend this audible recording of this to anyone trying to read the novel who may need incentive to move along with it, I think listening to the novel would certainly encourage any hesitation to complete the work, also it is truly a fascinating and historical accounting of what the women in WWII encountered and did to help the war effort, to take part in the fight against the axis powers of the time i.e., Germany, Italy. This also gives an account of the events occurring in England over the long years of the war, what families and individuals endured during the period.
I have given 4* but I would say this was 3* to 4* because of some slow pacing etc . . . overall definitely worth reading. For the accounts of those that lived through the time, so persons who haven't a lot of knowledge of the life and lives of women during WWII in UK etc. this is a recommend for you!

The way they have been treated by numerous governments is appalling and the total lack of care or concern for the wellbeing of these people by the UK government was and is disgusting.
Colonization; forced colonization and permanent exile is par for the course for the British, as history presents itself. The UK keeps going on about how these people were compensated! What a load of rubbish, the Chagos people received a pittance, not even enough to survive on all these decades. The Compensation appears to have gone to the Mauritius government, who certainly didn't pass it on to the people as it should have!
I was upset reading this and actually had to put it down for a while before coming back to finish it.
I recommend all should read this book and learn about the Chagos peoples and their situation, the fight for their home, identity, and acknowledgement of their position....more
Polly has penned the memoir of her life in Venice over one year, she writes of the Venetians and their community, the changing face of Venice through Polly has penned the memoir of her life in Venice over one year, she writes of the Venetians and their community, the changing face of Venice through the seasons, the difficulties of getting around Venice where there are no cars, where deliveries can be an adventure in patience and confusion.
She tackles the ever growing concern of the future of Venice that all Venetians have, their ability to be home when they are forced to move to the mainland, yet daily returning home to Venice.
The struggles of daily living while running the gambit of millions of unwanted tourists. Venetians venting ire at tourism, yet knowing their city depends upon it. How do they change this toxic environment for Venetians? The year of this memoir was 2011 and the prevailing commentary on Venice and its future is still being discussed in 2023.
I think everyone who has ever been to Venice or is contemplating a journey needs to read this book and reflect on what all of us, as tourists, are destroying in Venice, when we stomp through it, year after year.
Perhaps humanity requires more reflection on the consequences of millions of feet in Venice. An ancient and historical city that may well sink beneath the sea like Atlantis and be lost to us forever, if we don鈥檛 change how we treat her! ...more

Moving and movement from village toThis diary is about war, yes, but it is about people. The moving of people, either by circumstance, force or need. Moving and movement from village to village, town to town, from one city to the next, and so on, caused by inhuman acts and human crisis. As told through the eyes of a 12 year old child.
This is not your thrilling, exciting, page turning 5* book, this is a profound, emotional and life changing work that provides us with a documented, reality and accounting of our living times and events.
I say it is worthy of the rating, if only for its truth and present day reality, as this 鈥榳ar鈥 is still ongoing, without any sign of ending.
Yeva began her diary in February 2022 and today it鈥檚 July 2023, over a year ago, I hope that Yeva and her grandmother are still happy and settled in Ireland. Like Yeva, I can only send prayers to her, her family and the Ukrainian people, hoping that Ukraine and her people will prevail and those that have left her can one day return to their homeland....more

I enjoyed this intriguing adventure that these two men took in 1876 on the Oise river. The story tells of a different time and atmosphere; conjures up a relaxed atmosphere filled with conversation, food and local flavours. Enjoyable....more
