i have not come to understand either school of thought because i simply don’t think acotar is really worth this fervor and passion
it was just……… okay in all aspects. nothing that particularly delighted or enraged me
first 2/3 were a bit of a snooze fest, and the last third was relatively entertaining. yes, yes, you do have to stop thinking too hard about the politics and the character motivations to fully enjoy yourself but it is a far cry from being the worst thing i’ve ever read
the real tragedy is that lucien is far and away the best male character in the book and based on what i’ve absorbed about this series through cultural osmosis, he is not going to be a love interest ;-; sigh i suppose i will just root for him in a sad resigned way in my little corner (love u lucien)
tldr: i’m jealous if acotar is the worst book you’ve ever read and sad for you if it’s the best...more

there were countless beautifully written lines, so many paragraphs i’d want to quote in their entirety - but despite finding all of the characters words so interesting, the characters themselves did not move me at all
for me, their identities, their lives, their relationships with one another, felt of so little consequence that i think it detracted from my enjoyment. key plot events would happen that, rather than striking any emotional chords with me, ended up serving more as segues to the next long email about love, sex, and the state of the world
re: the emails - i found eileen and alice’s voices to be nearly indistinguishable from one another, so the email exchanges read less like a conversation between friends (ha!) and more like one person’s lengthy diary entries
while eileen and alice blended into one narrator in my mind, simon remained woefully passive and bland while felix veered between being barely tolerable or absolutely boorish and am i meant to be moved by the fact that two intelligent, sensitive women are, against all odds, in deep, mind-altering love with these men? >:/
if this book had simply been a series of essays or even a stream-of-consciousness word dump on what rooney believes to be the true meaning of life, i think it could’ve been a five star read for me
tldr; i guess i prefer my existentialism undiluted. still recommend reading though!...more

everyone else’s chapters - so criminally boring that my eyes started to glaze over whenever a libby chapter was coming to an end. 1000 things going on and 0 reasons for me to care about any of it
i have unfortunately committed to this trilogy so i’ll probably read the final installment eventually, but if i didn’t have masochistic reader tendencies i would’ve dropped this series halfway through book one...more

now i know nothing about paris hilton aside from what she wrote in her memoir. this (positive) review of her book is in no way a blanket endorsement of her as a person, but i did find her story to be equally inspiring and heartbreaking. i’m moved by her bravery in facing her past trauma in order to bring awareness to the harms of the TTI and to lobby for legislation that protects the children affected by those abusive structures
i’m coming out of this book more empathetic to the plight of “rich, ditzy party girls and the hardships they may be enduring behind the scenes. hilton fully acknowledges the privilege she’s been blessed with while still highlighting the cruelty of media and the ongoing abuses she suffered
the book could’ve benefited from fewer mentions of her nft hustle (yikes!), but overall i thought the writing flowed well and the organization of stories was sensible. a moving read. ...more

and yet, by novel's end i simply did not care about a single character or plot point in the present-day timeline. will stevie solve the case? is david really who he says he is? what is ellie hiding? could not care less. all other characters were relatively one-dimensional and barely important to the progression of the story
the biggest downside is that the school's major mystery is not solved within this one novel, but (i assume) over the course of the series itself. that leaves a lot of unsatisfying moments, and it unnecessarily delays/prolongs what would probably be interesting plot developments.
instead, we get filler subplots that i did not ask for and am not interested in plus a romance with the world's most annoying teenage boy (which is saying a lot considering the sad state of teenage boyhood). perhaps these subplots will all become relevant in the end with a grand reveal tying everything together, and if that is the case i will gladly own up to being wrong if that means i get to read an interesting book
maybe i am too much of an optimist because i am willing to give the rest of this series a chance (pls let the sequels be better) BUT i think it should be illegal to write a murder mystery/thriller/suspense novel that is so bland that the big reveals and plot twists actually lowered my heart rate ...more
