The difference between guilt and shame is an interesting one and got me thinking about how to move from shame (I am bad) to guilt (I did something bad) in my own life. Guilt can be a catalyst for change, shame can mire you down and erode your sense of self-worth and confidence in your ability to change.
I think this is the kind of book that would benefit from an accompanying workbook, or a reread. :) Still, if these issues are things you struggle with, I definitely recommend it!...more

This novel-in-verse tells the story of two teenagers in Cuba during the 1990s when citizens were starving as the government put on a show for the international community by hosting sports games.

This story was beautifully written, but I didn't buy into the depth of their relationship so quickly. I was hoping for more character development when the story just ended abruptly. Sadly, it ended too soon, before I really grew to care too much for the characters or really into their relationship. I obviously see and agree with the author's point, but wanted this book to be more powerful than it was. 3 stars...more

As the parent of a girl who was misdiagnosed with ADHD as a child, and correctly diagnosed with Autism as an adult, this book hit me right in the feels. I admit that the author's style was a little off-putting, but even that was helpful and it gives insight into how the neurodivergent brain works differently from my own. So many of the author's experiences made me look back on how I raised my own daughter and cringe. I wish I had known better - I would have done better. At this point, we just learn and press forward.
I recommend this book to any girl/woman who thinks they might be on the Autism Spectrum, and anyone who loves or interacts with a girl/woman on the Spectrum. you might not enjoy reading this book, and you probably won't agree with the author on everything (I didn't), but you'll learn something and you'll improve how you relate with/treat women on the Spectrum....more

This time through I listened to the audio book in French. I was reminded that I really do NOT enjoy this narrator (Bernard Giraudeau) because he gives too many characters lisps and uses a really awful voice for Hagrid that makes Hagrid sound like his IQ is about 50.
The story itself, is awesome. This series is one of my favorites that I try to reread at least every couple of years. This particular installment is where Harry, Ron, and Hermione really begin to move from childhood into young adulthood. Fantastic plotting, pacing, character development, and world building. Now Wulfe has disappeared and the pack is getting blamed. When Mercy can't reach Stefan and they find Marsilia's seethe empty, the hunt begins. Turns out a LOT of people have disappeared in the Tri-Cities recently, and all of them have just a little bit of magic. Are the disappearances related to Wulfe's? As Mercy and Adam investigate, the path gets darker and more twisted. Who or what is behind it? Will their alliances hold? Can they successfully defend their territory?
Meanwhile, we find out who Sherwood Post really is and how that threatens the Columbia Basin Pack. We also get more background on Wulfe, Marsilia, and Stefan. I loved learning more about these beloved characters and was surprised by the culprit in the end. This book is just as well-written as the others and the character development is consistent through the series - it's believable.
Don't start with this book unless you don't mind SERIOUS spoilers, but don't miss this book if you're a Mercy fan!! 5 enthusiastic stars!
