Sadly, this book, while set back in the Tri-Cities, has the same problem that Silence Fallen did - not enough of the peripheral characters! As much as I love Mercy (and I do!), I miss Warren, Kyle, Ben, and Jesse (each of whom get only one appearance in the entire book). Sigh. We do learn a lot about Sherwood Post and his past, which is fun. There's some fun stuff with Zee and Tad; and Stefan and Marsilia each have a cameo, but I miss the rest of the pack that I've come to love. Darryl, Aurelie, Warren, Kyle, Jesse, and Honey are mentioned in passing, but only in passing.
Other than that, the book is fabulous! I love how the characters have grown over the course of the series, but stayed true to their essence. I love how Briggs' magical world continues to grow, but stay true to its roots. I love how each book builds on the previous ones (there are always little threads in each book that lay the groundwork for future story lines). This series is definitely escapism at its finest! 4.5 stars instead of 5 because I miss Adam's pack, but still highly recommended!...more

Mercy and Adam are separated for the majority of the book, and I really missed the fun of their interactions as well as the other pack members I have come to love. There was no Ben, no Warren, only one scene of Jesse, no Zee or Tad, etc. It's still worth reading, but not as enjoyable as the others.
8/23/2023: I enjoyed it more this time than last time. Probably 3.5 stars.
5/12/2024: I'm rereading both this series and Alpha and Omega in "in universe" order in preparation for the release of Winter Lost next month. I would rate it closer to 4 stars this time, although I stand by my comments above about missing the pack!...more

I love this series, it's brain candy escapism that won't change your life, but isn't totally mindless either. I love a strong woman and a strong man who supports and loves that strong woman. I love characters who fight to do the right thing even when it's hard, inconvenient, or dangerous. (But not in a goody-goody or unbelievable way). They just do it because they want good to prevail over evil. I love how Mercy and Adam respect and care for each other. I love how the pack functions. I love the well-developed side characters and how each book builds believably on the events of the last.

I listened to the author read this one and it felt like sitting down and having a heart-to-heart conversation. There was so much profound doctrine and insight that I'm going to need to reread it in print with a highlighter, a pen, and my journal in hand. I found AnnaI love the world Briggs has created, but the characters in this book are nowhere near as compelling as those in the Mercy Thompson books. I found Anna to be too waffling, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt because of her past. Charles just bothered me (probably due more to how the narrator on the audiobook did his voice than anything else). I enjoyed the book, but didn't buy into their relationship or grow to care about them nearly as much as Mercy and Adam and their pack. I'll read more of the series and hope they grow on me.
Edited 4/18/2022 to add: This time I actually read the book instead of listening to it and I liked it so much more! Maybe it's because I've now read 6 books (and a novella) about Charles & Anna and like them better, or maybe it's because there's no annoying narrator making Charles sound like a developmentally disabled person. But whatever it is, I enjoyed this book far more this time and I'm bumping my rating from 3 stars up to 4 stars....more

It's the perfect blend of mystery, adventure, romance, and fantasy with a kicka$$ female protagonist who knows when to fight and when to save her energy to fight another day. Briggs has created a world that's so fun to escape to for a little while.
1-14-2023: This time through I was reminded how much I love Adam and how he treats Mercy with respect and trust, allowing her to handle her own life, despite the protective Alpha instincts. I think this is why I enjoy this series even though the paranormal UF genre sometimes makes me crazy....more
