But one night when his bed breaks through the floor into Ms. Hattie's spaghetti and then on down floor by floor through his apartment building, things get a little crazy! Told with a bit of a cumulative style, the illustrations are the star of this story. The text gets a little tongue twisty as each person's name rhymes somehow with Ms. Hattie. But, the book is a lot of fun and kids will love it. A fun group read aloud!...more

Patrick heads to the kitchen one morning to get breakfast and finds a cow waiting there. When his dad asks him for eggs to make french toast, there are chickens in the fridge. So, you can imagine how Patrick has to get the syrup! :) The illustrations are fun and a bit child-like, and the story is cute. This could spark a fun discussion of where our food comes from, without being the same old boring pictures of factories or processing plants. A nice group read aloud for preschool story time....more

The text is simple and sparse, but completely clear and uplifting. The illustrations are vivid and bright and the perfect compliment to the text. The idea of fighting monsters (the dogs on the way to school) and walking with giants (the bigger kids at the school bus stop) are so relatable to little kids! (I especially loved that the librarian is the "Guardian of Wisdom"!) This book couches the ethereal idea of bravery in terms kids will be able to understand and emulate.
A great read aloud or one-on-one read with an anxious child. I definitely recommend this one.

I'm not a comic book or graphic novel fan, but I enjoyed this fun story. A few chapters were nothing but pictures, which is always harder for me (I prefer to use my own imagination), but they were easy enough to follow along. I loved the diversity and the ease with which the kids were able to accept each other....more

This is a super interactive book where you can really get the kids involved as they take turns to "high five" the book and compete with the characters. Definitely a great group read aloud with rhyming text and awesome crayon/pencil drawings that really set the mood.
