This is a fun story, but the illustrations bothered me - the yeti is brown and looks more like a grizzly bear than a yeti....more

I honestly don't know if it's a gimmick entirely written by Chris Van Allsburg, or if what he says in the intro is true. The introduction tells us that the fourteen pictures included in the book were originally brought to his editor by a man named Harris Burdick. Mr. Burdick said he had drawn one picture for each of his fourteen different stories and wondered if the publisher would be interested in reading them. Mr. Burdick had titled each picture and noted one sentence in reference to what was happening in it. The publisher was very interested and asked Mr. Burdick to come back the next day with the stories. He agreed, but was never heard from again. Apparently, the publisher could never find him or figure out who he really was. So, here we get fourteen black & white pictures, each with a title and one sentence explanation. Other than that, it's wordless.
This would make an interesting writing/discussion exercise with kids ages 8-12. Read the introduction, and then look through the pictures and make up stories to go with them....more

There's a fox giving a lecture (complete with an easel and visual aids) about couches. He's interrupted by another fox insisting that he can't fill kids' heads with such nonsense. I thought it was going to go into a little satire about censorship, but instead it just got more and more silly. I would use this in a story time with kids ages 5+, but definitely not with the littles....more
