As a transplant, the swamps beckon, the Story is Real. Finding my faith in the most Catholic of cities, Wells has really impacted the love for food and general, gumbo in particular. A magic that transcends whatever bullshit is occurring today. It reminds us to preserve our precious land we've claimed through work and struggle and determination; to value our community, to realize we are all in this together. And to rejoice with the feeling of home, of love. Beautiful art, communal, humanity at its best. Cannot find it but here....more

This one is about two boys names Will Grayson who orbit around another character--an Ignatius with a gay sensibility that makes him shine through. Other characters are dull compared to this one. Seriously!
The lessons learned in this one are profound. All the characters are so thought out, so real. And the musical? It is a dream!...more

White privilege, money, connections, exclusivity. BUT! A way to organize the city that implies your connection to this slow moving place--that you are part of it. I will one day perhaps join a Krewe, and could you imagine getting into the actual group? And... which one? There are marching Krewes, Parade ones, all based on European Monarchy marches through any devoted and true city.

Yes--this was a fact which made me think that everyone cries and laments in the real world. Not true. But in the realm made literary by the Pen Faulkner Award recipient--he is world building! Most of his sensitive protagonists were manufactured this certain way, it's his brand!

This book was recommended to me by one of the Cajun Grannies, Mrs. Harriet. She was right. This book is rife with very amusing anecdotes. The dos and don'ts of funeral planning, in the South. Because here in the South, everything is good mannered. Why? The South has gone through many missteps and misadventures... the only thing some people were left with, after all the money and glory was depleted, was manners. And the only way we can honor our death is through tradition and what is right. For them, for us--continuing traditions is the only way to live. I skipped through the recipes, however....more

This experiment in prose succeeds in being whimsical while delivering a heavy dose of realism--the existence of wildlife among the urban landscape.
