It sucked up way too much of my time tho. It feels weird to finally be done w it just cuz i’ve been wanting to read it for so long. It is very trippy book and i feel like i need to sit with it to process it. I love how murakami builds characters tho and like everything so carefully crafted and makes so much sense but also like wtf is happening. The buildup for anomame and tengo to finally meet was killer. The cult idea was very interesting and seems like there’s a lot to unpack there. The perceiver and receiver thing was cool....more

I remember some lady in lg at the happy dragon was like u have to read this book and i got it bc it was like $1 only and it really was so good. I love the multigenerational narratives and the bouncing around in time and piecing things together. It was kind of predictable but the writing was so well done so very engaging. Eliza was an interestinf character something slightly unsettling. Adeline was terrible i cannot believe it is possible to be like that. Rose was interesting but she also was terrible in the end. And i liked how elizas stories were so relevant and she didnt even seem to realize it just her self expression. Linus creeped me out. A veey engaging read!...more

Interesting analogy of aliens stopping by for a roadside picnic. I am surprised this was a soviet book bc it seems not pro communism. Or like cuz the stalkers are independent workers and there’s a part where red is anti jobs, comparing working for someone to slavery. Also individualistic ideas bc he’s like my soul is mine. The cry for happiness and for everyone to be remembered at the end stands out. Anyways, cool to find out my dad read this book when he was younger....more

I feel drained after reading it but also so incredibly grateful for the pretty safe and healthy childhood and life i’ve lived. The opioid crisis in our country is such a terrible feedback loop that wrecks so many lives. Reading demon’s perspective was pretty insightful bc it’s hard to blame him or heavily criticize him for his use after everything he’s been through. After what happened to his mom you’d think he’d know better but when that is what you’re taught and surrounded by it’s so tough. And it’s crazy how the hospitals feed into it. It’s ugh just so terrible. I overall really liked demon as narrator / just as a character. I am glad he had his art as an outlet throughout it all. And it ended on a positive note glad he finally got to see the ocean. But yeah wow what a story it’s just so sad that this is the reality of a significant portion of people. What to do what to do...more

But i’m so glad i saw it a friends bookstore and got it bc i loved it. She writes so nice and funnily and just so real. I liked the discussion about cities having a word and also people having a word (bc i usually have a word in mind but it’s usually for what i am trying to be/do, not what i currently am). I also thought the analysis of italians liking beautiful excellent things in their daily life like food, performance, love, beauty due to their distrust and dislike stemming from the corruption of the more abstract government/mafia. And then her time in india was cool to read about. I really like richard. This brought me back to my spiritual phase, i think i’m inspired. Then i really liked her time indonesia , finding balance between the pleasure and strict devotion to god. And ofc she actually did fall in love, that was so cute. Yeah i highly recommend this if u like traveling. Oh yeah also i loved how many people she met throughout her travels...more
