This is my 4th book/graphic novel I've read by Joe Hill and I gotta say, I think he's better than his dad. Stephen King is an amazing and wonderful author that I enjoy reading, but I have definitely found more enjoyment from Hill's books.
This is Joey boys' first novel. And it is really good. A very tense and interesting ghost story. I was trying to think about it, and I'm not sure I've ever read a good ghost story before. I've watched good movies that are ghost stories, but never have I read a good ghost book until now. Maybe I should try more. There has to be more.
The book was perfectly tense and suspenseful. Filled with nice little breaks of times to breathe. I've read books before where there is so much going on that you can't even catch a breath yourself and this was perfectly paced.
I'm a big believer that an ending can make or break a book. And I'm happy to report this had a good ending. I think it could have been better, but I also don't have anything to complain about. A solid case of I don't know how or what to fix, but I feel like it could've been better.
I was also happy that I thought I had the ending figured out and...I didn't! And I love that. Glad I wasn't able to predict it.
A great ghost story that I could easily recommend to people who are fans of the genre....more

I've been trying really hard over the last year or....maybe two? To try and read more books that are encouraging, helpful, motivating. Books that help me kick my butt into gear and inspire me.
This is one such book that I randomly came across. I had seem some very positive things, and decided to give this one a go without knowing much about it at all.
First, I had no idea that this was a book from a Christian perspective. As a Christian man I thought that was really cool. It was nice to have good advice that most people would agree with, but backed by things in the Bible.
Second, while this book wasn't my favorite there are a few things in here that I'm going to be able to look back on and say that changed my life forever. In a positive way. There were things in here that just hit me with a ton of bricks and for whatever reason it clicked.
This book is strange. It isn't going to be for everyone, but if you get just two absolutely solid things from this book like I did, then it is 100% worth it. It's short. It's sweet. It's practical. And I think it's probably worth your time....more

Was in a bit of a reading slump and this one pulled me out of it. As someone with Scandinavian heritage (Norwegian) I really enjoyed all the Finnish folklore in this tale. It was a breath of fresh air.
Overall I really enjoyed the writing. Emily Rath has a good day with the written word. There were some points in the story that just blistered on a little speedily. It made pacing a little weird and some things seem more unrealistic than it should have been. But other than that I have no complaints.
I enjoyed the characters quite a bit! Especially most of the pantheon of gods. The bad guys were bad the good guys were good and a couple of gray characters that I felt were well placed in the story as well.
My big complaint in the book is that why can't we just have a story about best friends? I feel like this story would have been so much more interesting if Aina and Siiri didn't have an undertone of lovers. The chemistry between Vainamoinan and Siiri was way more interesting, and then it was played off as a different kind of relationship. I also felt that Aina and Tuoni was WAY more interesting.
But I want to end on a positive note. This book is good. It is a fairly easy read that flows nicely. And the cover art and the art on the pages edges is just gorgeous. I would recommend this book to a lot of people. But especially to people that like stories about different pantheon of gods. From Greek to Roman. This offers a nice different voice and I can't wait to read the sequel....more

This poor book caught me at a bad time when I wasn't really getting engaged. I actually really enjoyed what I did read. I think Rainbow Rowell is a great author. But it got returned to the library twice, and I'm just not going to check it out again. I will read Rowell again and about 3/4 of this book was definitely entertaining. I'm saying at the top here that I like these books just fine. But I'm also saying that I personally feel like these books are wildly overrated. I know I'm in the minority on this, and that happens some times for sure, but I just don't vibe with much in these books. Every once in a while there is something that happens and I get super invested. I think that I'm finally going to figure out what is so special about these books that everyone talks so much about! And then a couple chapters later it's more just....average stuff.
Now, with all that being said, I think I figured out what it is about these that just can't get me into it. I think it's Brown's prose. Maybe I am just not a fan. There seems to be interesting stuff going on, I just can't seem to care as much as I should.
Who knows really, but I know that I'm not going to be reading more of these. I gave it 3 books and it's just average at best to me. Minus a few moments that were really special.
Books are so strange. I usually really like most of the popular books that are going around. They usually get hot for a minute for a reason. But every once in a while there is a book that is praised that you don't like, and one that everyone says sucks, that you do like; the former is how I feel about this series. ...more

Definitely not as good as his first book. But still found stuff to enjoy in here. Manson has an interesting way of looking at things and I appreciate what he's going for. But if you are going to read his books I would definitely start with The Subtle Art of not giving AF. It was wildly more helpful and intuitive than this one.
The final chapter of this book was wild though. Minor spoilers ahead, but he talks about AI and it's crazy to think about where we are possibly going....more

This is one of those series that is really special. I read that first book at the end of last year and came away surprised at how much I liked it, and the same goes for this one. I finished it awhile ago and the more I sit with these books the more that I like them. This book, like the first, isn't overly filled with action and craziness. But it is filled with interesting characters and stories and a world that just keeps getting more real and interesting.
This book doesn't follow the same character as the first book, but instead decides to tell the story of how the continent he came from, really came into prominence. It's set some 1000 years in the past or something. And it was a really unique direction to take the series in, and I quite appreciate that!
The two main characters were very interesting to follow. Their story is a very crazy and poignant one. I can't wait to get to the next book. ...more

This was my Haloween spooky read this year. And thank you to the library for getting it to me just in time so I could finish it Haloween morning :)
This book was a lot of fun. It reminded me of Coraline (I watched the movie and never read the book, but I still find it similar.) which I think is a good thing. A (sort of) portal fantasy that is seemingly everything you could want at first, but turns out...nope! Not exactly what you thought it was.
This is my first Clive Barker book and I really enjoyed it. He is known, famously, for his horror. And I can see why. Even though this is a more YA type book the creep factor was still here. I was really impressed with how creepy this felt, and at the same time still be totally acceptable for a younger audience. I think I'd be willing to let my 10 (almost 11) year old daughter read this. That, to me, is just a testament to Barker's writing.
I really liked where this book went. I thought it was going one place when Harvey, our MC, entered the "perfect" world. And soon realized I was wrong. I love it when I'm wrong and caught off guard. The ending was really good too. Extremely satisfying, with a dose of touching. The good kind of touching, not the pervy kind.
This book made me really want to pick up Coraline to compare the 2. It also made me really want to read more Barker. Which I'm sure I will do both, after reading this. I would definitely recommend this. It was quite fun....more

Holy crap I could NOT get into this book. I made it 40% and kept telling myself to plow through, it's gonna get better. Sorry. Couldn't finish. If you haven't grabbed me at 40% then there are some serious problems.
Maybe Star Wars books just aren't for me. I haven't really vibed too much with any of them that I've read.
I was reading and listening to this one in tandem, and I do want to compliment the audio book. It is filled with Star Wars noises and music and it definitely makes it feel like a production of some kind. It was really neat. The narrator did a fine job too, of what I listened to. So kudos on that front.
But this book is not good in my opinion. I didn't care about any of the characters. I didn't care about any of the plot points. There was nothing I could be bothered to worry about. I don't know what people see in this book. I think I'm going to try one more Star Wars series before I give up on the books completely. And that is Rogue Squadron. I like Michael Stackpole, and I don't care that these aren't "canon" anymore. I just want to find a Star Wars book I enjoy.
