He comments on his experiences in North Carolina and around the nation on building political coalitions that must challenge the current state of affairs. He notes that if you include all persons that are within one-two paychecks of financial stress, it would be near 45% of the American population. Therefore, the big secret in America not discussed is that the vast majority of poor people are white and that both neoliberal and conservative political agendas do not address the needs of the "true poor." The book gives an overview of the history of racist practices in America and how multi-ethnic coalitions have tried to fight for the poor. He makes the observation that "Jim Crow's son is better educated and that now Jim Crow, Esq. uses his law degree to continue the exploitation of others."
