To me, the concepts Jocko describes are the most concise and basic (and most difficult to master) principles of leadership. I loved the three-part style (real life story, leadership concept, business applicability) that breaks the monotony that is sometimes found in other books on leadership. I borrowed the book from the library, but bought three copies to give to my employees....more

Beyond theLike an impending train wreck...you can't look away. You have a feeling it is going to be messy, but hope somehow the wreck can be avoided. Beyond the inexplicable appeal of looking at a horrific crash as you drive past it on the freeway, this story is a testament to the adaptability of humanity - apparently we can make it through just about anything. Kudos to the author for rising above terrible circumstances, and for sharing them. I felt like the writing style allowed me to move beyond simply peering through the window into the author's life. The author's empathy for an incredible string of inexcusable behaviors and deep honesty teaches a PhD course in what it is to live this human life. ...more

The idea is that the best way to interact with someone else who you are trying to help is to utilize the principles in the book. For my part, I'd say the principles in the book can/should be applied to nearly every relationship. I really enjoyed the content and appreciated that the author provided all his "lists" of important points as actual lists - saves me the trouble of writing a book review for myself so I can remember what the book was about. I'm looking forward to becoming someone's trusted advisor....more

The true value in the reading was the potential for cross-functional enhancement of my own creativity as I went 鈥渂ehind enemy lines鈥 to see what is going on in the field of creativity. Before I say anything about the book, I have to add the disclaimer that I am obviously not the target market for this book, so anything I write has to be viewed through that lens. I thought the book was a bit lame. The subject matter was super juvenile, but the way it was written is not as clear as it should be for a juvenile mind. So many character names, so many new words, so hard to follow what is going on - it just doesn't seem like a kid book even though I can't imagine anyone other than a kid reading it. So where does that leave the book? (Answer: in the 2-star range)...more

This is a fictional novel based on non-fiction events and while I understand Robbins' intentions in adding in the fictional storylines, I can't help but wonder if the book might have been more satisfying without them. The gripping part of the story is the part that actually took place - in contrast, I had to fight back the urge to skipover the "dialogue" and interpersonal relationships that the Robbins invented....more
