there is brilliant characterization, the plot twists & pacing couldn't be done better really. the story is narrated so beautifully. the dialogues feel so real to the reader and as soon as you meet the chatacters you can't help but keep on reading to know more about what happens to them.
i LOVE it when i read about something i have little to no clue about. constant mentions of important people i've never heard of, references to classical literature, sentences in another language, theories, comparisons that make no sense at first? yes, please give it to me i'll eat it up.
this is one of my first dives in modern classics prose and it's definitely a huge a challenge to try and grasp the sense of this book. i can very well understand if people don't like it considering that i myself had some trouble at times and felt the hate from our love-hate relationship overpowering the love (but that's the charm of it, isn't it?). it all really comes to whether you're the type of person who would endorse the long narrative describing each thought and verbose descriptions enjoyable to dissect. i did, so !!
all in all, i wouldn't jump to recommend this book to anyone. it's the thing that you never know whether you'll like or not until you've read the last page. fortunately for me i fell deeply in love with it and i'm so glad that i bought a physical copy instead of reading it digitally. now i can come back years later with my new experiences and cringe at my annotations but, at the same time, excited to uncover this world all over again...more
4.5 but i'm giving it 5 here because that book totally deserves it.
okay wow, i'm kind of speechless to be honest. totally, absolutely loved this nove4.5 but i'm giving it 5 here because that book totally deserves it.
okay wow, i'm kind of speechless to be honest. totally, absolutely loved this novel. the hardships, discovery and private wars Ari had to go through to figure it out - worth it 100%. i cried a bit throughout the book but the ending REALLY got me to tears running and nose sniffles. writing vocab was mostly plain but the style really did it for me, i never would've expected to see a few words holding the meaning of a hundred, very impressive. a skill only some writers have mastered and the author of this book definitely has. the thing about books like these is that you could probably reread them a thousand times and find connections you didn't even notice the previous time around, and i think that's what makes it so special to me.
the only flaw (to me, that is) would be that sometimes i would get a bit lost while reading and notice i can't really remember events from previous pages i read. this might be completely on me though, and it didn't really bother me after i quickly skimmed over them lol
i don't usually reread books, but this one makes me go all giddy inside. i also don't usually annotate books but i gave Ari and Dante a go and it turned out pretty as hell, i think i might faint just by looking at it. anyway, definitely a must-read YA novel. surely not a masterpiece, but if you enjoy other YA novels you won't regret picking up this one !!...more
