In some ways I had with it’s short read/listening time and not very in depth or heavy going anything really. There were some cute moments (although what on Earth was going on with that ending?) and there is opportunity for some good character development across the series of the main characters.
However it fell short in a number of ways and I am surprised as there are so many books in the series I was expecting more.
The characters were not really very cat like, occasionally there were moments where you realised their size when they had to climb up to do things, but they really just approached everything as humans, which was a bit of a shame as I was really looking forward to investigations involving cat like senses and ‘whiskery moments. Instead confronted with racial stereotypes/accents of characters and cats that dressed and cooked and drove around in cars like people. I didn’t find the case to be of interest in the story line either, the characters didn’t seem to try to investigate properly and always seemed to be given a lot of reward for no work! I understand this is their first case, but come on!
It wasn’t an awful book, and maybe my own preconceived hopes of what a feline detective agent would be like has impacted my read and review, but I shan’t be hurrying to read the rest of the series sadly.

It isn’t a book I would normally have picked up but I stumbled across the audio book in the Libby app and thought I would give it a go. It was good company during lots of kitchen scrubbing. ...more

However as time went on I was very disappointed that this was yet another story about how empty a woman’s life is being childless/childfree and how women suddenly ‘wake up and realise they have made a huge mistake and actually need to have children to give their life any meaning.
Ugh such a shame as it really put a dampener on the last section of the book for me.
Flow of the writing was good and the narration of the audio book was also good, just spoiled for me.
*edit : Ooh and also that a scientist was saying that the baby was in her stomach instantly took me out of the story, because it really feels like a scientist wouldn’t have said that. ...more

I was disappointed that it turned into a case of Stockholm syndrome with the added bonus of an ‘adult, knowing a 7 year old and then a few years down the line having a relationship with her while she was still technically a child. Gave me the ick personally...more

I can’t really put my finger on why I enjoyed it so much and I can see for other people it isn’t the top of their charts but I found it flowed, there were lots of characters but it didn’t feel disjointed or overly descriptive. This meant I could learn about the characters from their actions rather than appearance.

There were lots of characters and all had a visual description which I found difficult to manage (who knows why). However once you get to know the characters it seems to flow well. I feel like the story could have ended a few chapters earlier, the wrapping up of all of the characters felt a little unnecessary for me but I understand that other people may want the closure. It just felt like I didn’t need to know if they all get a happy ending or not because of how the story had been all the way through. I do like however that community had such a focus and I hope it encourages people to make connections and be brave getting to know people out there in the big wide world....more
