My schedule has been a bit nutty these past couple of weeks and a book that I should have read in two days turned into a nine-day affair.
A big thank you to MG for letting me know that this series improves (she is absolutely correct) and that book #4 is great (also correct)!
So, this is book #4 in Moning’s Highlander series. I read book #1 and while I enjoyed the time travel aspect of the story, I felt there were quite a lot of ‘ends being tied up by unexplained ‘magic' and that annoyed me quite a bit.
When it comes to plotlines, I'm a "dot your i's and cross your t's" kinda girl and Moning's first book left me frustrated.
Well, Moning showed me because this was NOT an issue in book 4. She explained things thoroughly this time around and triple-checked the hell out of her plot.
Now, Gwen could have been spouting complete and utter bullshit when it came to all that physics jargon she went on about and I wouldn’t have known the difference, because when it comes to physics

Seriously, it was my worst class. Ever.
Anyway, I really liked Gwen and I just loved Drustan. He was the right mix of Thor and Tenderheart Bear. I enjoyed Gwen and Drustan as a couple, too. Their chemistry/physics game was strong and they could nerd out together happily for eternity.
Overall, 4 stars. I will be reading more from this series!...more

I did not know this was a 'fantasy romance,' so you can understand why I was COMPLETELY CONFUSED as to why the James Bond-esque hero turned all Charles Xavier on me.

Like whaaaaaaa???
Despite my immense confusion, I did not give up and read this baby until the very end. Afterward, I glanced at some of the reviews on goodreads and realized I was not the only one confused by this story. Some of the other reviewers tagged it as 'fantasy romance' and/or 'paranormal romance' which made me have the 'lightbulb moment' and it clicked that I had read this book wrong. Thankfully, I grew up watching A LOT of soap operas, so I didn't have a big problem suspending all reality to buy in, but I could see why other people would. I don't get why the book's description wasn't clearer. Amazon lists it as a 'dark fantasy.' Now, I'm not sure what images come to your mind when you read 'dark fantasy,' but mine is certainly not this:

which is all I could think of while I read anything having to do with King.
Needless to say, I was equal parts confused and put off.
Now, I don't read fantasy-romance, so I don't have anything to compare this book regarding the fantasy element, but this author did a terrible job in explaining practically everything. Characters would appear and disappear with zero explanation as to how. King could kill people by blinking. Mia, had magical powers that she never noticed before, not to mention repeated fainting spells. And none of this was explained. The author can't get away with explaining everything under the guise of, "magic" and expect me to buy in (especially when she doesn't actually explain).
Moving on to the relationship in this story. Spoiler: there wasn't one. There was very little chemistry between King and Mia, and basically non-existence 'smexy' time. 'Dark romance' my ass.
Now, I probably won't be reading this author again. I don't think she and I click. In the story, she references stopping at a convenience store for something refreshing like 'Fresca and Doritos.'

There is never a time where that combination works, 'dark fantasy' or not.
Anyway, as for positives, this book was free on KU and it was under 300 pages....more
