You know what, getting burnt out on reading really sucks. I received this book as an ARC on October 2021, right at that time I was sort of beginning to feel burnt out on reading. Well one thing led to another whichled me into DNF'ing this and everything else I was reading at the time. I thought I'd be back to reading after a short while (well that didn't fucking happen).
Now after 2 years and a fucking cyclone later with widespread floods, total blackout I get the bright idea to start reading again and decide to start with the same book that I left off. Promptly finished this book in about 10 hours and that's the best compliment that I can offer this book right now.
Wierd Rambling/review over
I will right a full review later (forgiveme Netgalley) once I've had time to collect my thoughts (its 4 in the morning where I'm at)...more

This sloThe synopsis gives you a false sense of the book's pacing. Events take way longer to unfold than what you'd expect from reading the synopsis. This slower pacing has authorial intent written all over it, whether it succeeded or not will depend upon the reader, personally I found it mildly annoying. The Protagonist Alwyn Scribe does not seem to have any sort of end goal throughout the book (other than trying to save his own skin which he does poorly). The plot felt aimless for the most part and the pacing is all over the place. The only saving grace was the characters. Alwyn's first person POV was enjoyable enough for me to get through the book....more

The story deals with two inspectors from the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities (basically the Men in Black but for monsters) as they investigate a case of haunting of a tram car (it's there in the title)
What started as something that feels like a simple case of djinn infestation quickly devolve into something that the inspectors and their department have never faced before. This synopsis might sound like it's setting up for some grave threat that would have far reaching effects, but in reality it's not the case. The best way to describe this story is that it feels like an episode In a series about monster hunters (I would gladly take more of such smaller sizes stories, I'll take two or ten) Also the lower stakes story meant the author could focus more on the worldbuilding aspect. (which is easily the best portion of this series)...more
