The story is basically one of survival in the wild in extreme circumstances. I can honestly say that I would die very quickly if I am ever unlucky enough to be in that situation, probably through starvation - I could never kill a living thing, no matter how hungry I got!!
Not my mind of book unfortunately, but that is not the book's fault....more

It is a masterful example of how to write a story sparingly, whilst still conveying every ounce of plot, but gently, with great impact.
The setting is a small Welsh island, with a tiny population, on which a whale has beached.
Enter two people from the mainland wanting to write a book about the island and its inhabitants. Our main character, Manon, being an intelligent 18 year old who speaks English (unlike the rest of the islanders) is the ideal candidate to assist the pair, who require a translator.
There is no huge explosion when the two worlds collide, and no whimper either. The author conveys the obvious message quietly, whilst delivering an impactful last page.
Five well deserved stars - it may not be loud, but I could not keep away....more

Firstly, we receive no explanation as to why a group of women are being held in a cage which is overseen by guards in shifts. The women have no idea either.
One day, a siren sounds and the guards leave suddenly - but they accidentally leave their keys. The women leave their cage and go outside.
The rest of the book follows their efforts in survival in a barren, deserted world. It is depressing, but totally absorbing, especially due to its main character.
Okay, this book will not win a Booker Prize, but it was a totally fun read!

Three totally different newly married couples are each on their honeymoons in Bali. As the story unfolds, we (and they!) discover that they are all connected in various ways. No-one is particularly delighted about these revelations.
Then the bodies start liking up...
Let's face it, if everything was perfect, this book would be a snoozefest, right?

Our moon is replaced by cheese. We do not know what type of cheese, although many try to guess. A large piece of this cheese breaks off, and is hurtling to earth, and an extinction level event is inevitable in two years' time.
Bonkers, right?
I think bonkers might be just what we all need in these uncertain times, and I can heartily recommend this totally bonkers tale. It has emotional moments, and I laughed often.
By the end, I found myself feeling that Mr Scalzi has actually caught the mood of the people in this scenario perfectly.
Would YOU eat a piece of the cheese moon? I cannot definitely say I would not...I do love cheese. ...more

The main character is Irish, as is the lovely narrator (Nicola Coughlan of Bridgerton fame), but the variety of other accents are all expertly performed - even their diverse personalities come through.
Thank you Nicola, you added to my enjoyment immensely! This is also why it gets four stars, but specifically for the audio version....more

It's not surprising to me that some people believe these things. The current US President complained about "fake news", but subscribes to some of them himself - who can forget the claim of Haitian immigrants eating people's pets in Springfield, Ohio!!
Conspiracies are usually more interesting than facts after all......more

It is 1905, and ten years since one of an Oxford University group of friends was murdered, but the killer was never unmasked.
