The beats to me always seem to be anti-war, I have now found out that wasn't always the case, a lot of them were patriotic and signed up when war was declared, the fact that they were too crazy to see any action is why they aren't well known as being involved.
This book covers the original beats and how war influenced them, it then moves on the second generation beats and how Vietnam affected them. War with other countries is not the only type of war included, war against racism, homophobia and Ginsberg's war to get Howl published.

I wasn't let down, my favourite essay was the short biography on Bukowski, there was nothing new to me but it was great to read about his life again.
There is also a fantastic poem in here but I couldn't find the name of it's author, a real shame.
I will be getting another beatdom edition soon to read.
