I really wanted there to be a twist ending that would save them, but I was pretty confident from the start that that wouldn’t be the case. It’s like a quick trip through the stages of grief. I really liked the main characters and their relationship. The whole situation with Peck seemed over the top and, in the end, kind of a pointless. I couldn’t decide if the inclusion of other characters through mini chapters, and the ways they all inevitably intersected with the main plot, was clever or trite. Death-Cast is an interesting concept, and the sci-fi nerd in me wanted a full explanation of how it works, but as others have said, it’s really not the point of the book. I thought the dialogue was a bit forced at times, but I don’t have an a priori objection to emotionally aware and articulate teenagers - I’m here for a John Green/David Levithan/Alice Oseman take on high schoolers� intelligence, depth of feeling and capacity for empathy. I just found the actual writing of the dialogue somewhat clunky in places. I’m not deducting for hanging plot threads, even if I would very much have liked resolutions, since not being around to see the end of the story is in fact the whole theme of the book. Overall, I’m glad I read it, and for a book that is one long foreshadowing of the inevitable sad ending, it was a surprising funny and heartwarming read.
