also i finished this so long ago and mentally still have not moved on from these characters at all (half of the reason i read so little in november & december is because i was voraciously consuming any and all yi city arc fanfic)...more
this might have worked at novella length but as it is this read terribly slow for a 250 page book. most of the time there’s not really anything happenthis might have worked at novella length but as it is this read terribly slow for a 250 page book. most of the time there’s not really anything happening and you have to just sit through pages and pages of tedious descriptions of tyler hiking and literally nothing else. then the most important part of the plot all goes down at the very end of the book where too much happens at once.
also one of the reasons i was interesting in reading this was the monsters which were sadly often described very poorly. like sometimes there were attacks and despite the character seeing the monster clearly it wasn’t described at all or with one sentence at most. also everything was just big or bigger than the last thing which kinda lost its meaning after in happened for the 3rd time with no good descriptions of what exactly that looked like.
the premise of this was very interesting to me but with the pacing and length issues it sadly didn’t live up to the intrigue. i also feel this book tested my suspension of disbelief more than a book should in regards to stupid decisions that were made and also just how few calories tyler was surviving on while essentially hiking all day for multiple days....more

i don't care that she is of age he holds way too much power over her for me to be on board with a relationship developing between them at that time
still really enjoyed the story, world and setting of the trials so it's still a 3 star but i don't think i will continue this series which saddens me cus i was really into it up until said scene ...more

i do think i was a little to harsh looking back at my 2022 notion entry after dnfing this but the writing still wasn’t very enjoyable to me. i enjoyed the characters and the story but the writing and the kindle version apparently being over 700 pages really dampened my enjoyment a bit.
i really did love ezra and josh and their relationship development though.
i did really enjoy this more than it sounds from this but yeah i just expected to like this way more....more
