Completely unbelievable. The prose is stilted from being Americanized as the author is British. I cannot believe Jackson's made a career from her prior books. I read that she wrote her first book at age 15, her writing has not progressed. Who does she know?? This is all infuriating because readers think her books are good and because quality manuscripts are not being published. End rant!...more

Really enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of this story. I knew the NYC she writes about so well that it was an interesting trip back. Love the map on the endpapers though I didn't need it as Manhattan in the 1980's was my home. The historical story about Lilian's career in Advertising at Macy's was very interesting as well. The parts I found hard to believe were some of Lilian's interactions with strangers during her 10.4 mile walk around Manhattan on new years eve. I especially found the interaction with the would be muggers completely unrealistic and unlikely to have happened in that way. I don't care what year in the 1980's it was set in, it would not have ended the way Rooney wrote it. But artistic license prevails. . .that's why this book does not 4 stars from me. Verisimilitude is everything. Listened to some of the audiobook. The voice grew on me, but when the narrator mispronounced the town named Mamaroneck I was jolted out of the world of the book. Where was the quality control for this type of pronunciation error?...more
