It was written more like a novel which made it more interesting. There was a lot of great history here about the forming of the Church. A lot of what was covered might have been more shocking if my husband and I hadn't already been reading church history on our own. I appreciate that they discussed controversial subjects and talked about both sides of the early conflicts inside the church.
What I mostly learned from this book is this: We're all human. (duh) Joseph Smith wasn't perfect. He was a normal guy like the rest of us, trying to do what God had asked of him. He made mistakes, sure. But don't we all?
I appreciate how much more open the leaders of the church are trying to be now. I think we all need that to help our testimonies grow and to more easily answer questions from those interested in what we believe and how we started. Until this past year, I never felt confident in my ability to properly answer questions from non-members. I now feel like I have some of the knowledge I need. But I constantly want to learn more....more
