I just stumbled across this in my recommendations! I remember hating this couple with a passion, kye or whatever his name is was SO DRY. Great respect for anyway who finished the whole series, I personally could never and will never return to these books. LOL, my dystopian YA era was definitely a period of growth.

Once again I have been fooled by a cutesy cover and an intriguing synopsis. It took me 5 days to finish this book because I hated it so much. I struggled to even get through the epilogue and the final few chapters secured a 2-star rating for me. For starters, I wasn't a fan of the writing style. Instead of having inner monologues, Hannah was written to just speak to the audience directly, and sometimes Hannah would just flow from present to past tense in ways that didn't entirely make sense.
one thing I haven't seen anyone talk about is the weird dynamic between jack and hank, and really their whole family seemed off in my opinion. Hank and Jack would just argue in ways that came across as very childish. They would stare at each other, jostle each other, and insult one another with little context. Even at times when jack was clearly trying to be helpful and be a good son for his mom, WHO HAD CANCER, hank was just a hateful little bitch. and neither of the parents tried to talk to them??!! Even by the end, Hank and jack's relationship felt unresolved
Let’s talk about the whole Robby/ Taylor situation. It was predictable and annoying. As Soon as it was said that Taylor would be replacing Hannah in Madrid we all knew it was gonna happen. I felt validated when Robby dumped her but Taylor's character was so underdeveloped I found myself not even caring all that much. Her only personality trait was that she was Hannah's ho best friend. From the beginning, it was clear that Bobby was dogshit but his lines were so ridiculously hilarious and were the only parts where I laughed out loud.
As for the rest of the team... In the beginning, we’re told that this security staff is elite and professional yet from the point they are hired to protect Jack Stapleton to the final page, the entire team acts like amateurs. We're told that Hannah is one of the best recruits they have on the team, yet we get one, maybe two scenes where actually get to see her in action. like come on, They’re supposed to have someone watching security footage at all hours but somehow miss it when a gunman takes jack hostage?!??
the emotional moments made me cringe. The entire book was comedic and surface-level so it felt uncomfortable and lacking in context when any of the charters had emotional conversations. Hannah's descriptions were dumb and cheap. I felt bad for Hannah as she was constantly being confused and insulted by her coworkers or even jack himself. It was hard for me to root for the main couple when the leading man explicitly called her "plain" as a compliment.
Final thoughts: Some of the tropes fell short. For example, don't have a one-bed trope if the characters don't even share the bed!! Even though most of the character cast was in their late twenties or older they all acted like children, specifically Glenn, Robbie, and Hank. I hated most of their personalities but I won't shit on Connie (since she had cancer :D). The big reveal about the car crash was lame. The epilogue was hard to believe, Hannah claimed that Jack "did something good every day", that's a lie babe, we know that's a lie. And I understand that saying Ryan Gosling and Reynolds were at their wedding was supposed to be funny but it sounded juvenile. LET'S B HONEST IN REAL LIFE JACK STAPLETON WOULD BE A B-LISTER AT MOST, so there's no freaking way Meryl Streep sent you steak knives, sorry.
was similar to funny you should ask, and the movie miss congeniality but both were better.

Absolutely loved Maxon and America and they will forever be one of my all-time favorite couples. These were the heart of YA dystopian fiction in their heyday and I recommend this trilogy for young teens who are still searching for genres they like.
That being said, I know if I were to reread I could find many new flaws to scrutinize, but the selection series already has a special place in my heart and I refuse to compromise it! ...more
