Also disappointed that we discover the love interest experienced insta-love upon seeing the FMC. Would have preferred her winning him over. I just feel like a lot of these books don't really take into account what the male characters need in a romance.
I guess they must have an overpopulation problem that's not addressed since they are really cool with students dying, whether by murder or failure to tell the initiates what kind of boots to wear....more

Unfortunately, there wasn't enough active parenting described here, just a passive acceptance of Patricia's children hating her. There wasn't enough about the vampire either. The past/present "parallel" wasn't fully formed as we do not learn more about the past than the bare minimum. As with Witchcraft for Wayward Girls (which I enjoyed a lot more otherwise), the story relies on a magic black woman to fix things for the white people.
I love how, for the most part, Grady Hendrix is able to write great women characters. He failed here, but not for lack of trying. Oof for the male characters, though--not a single redeeming one. I understand why a lot of horror stories star women but I would love for him to try writing a great male main character for his next book....more
