I enjoyed some chapters more than others, but all in all a fun and informative read, especially for involuntary time travelers or time-traveling disaster tourists. I would have liked even more detailed maps or directions in certain chapters. ...more

Thankfully I haven't gotten into any bad financial situations, but I am also not saving as much as I want to for future goals.
I was looking for a book specifically about ADHD/money handling, but someone recommended this book instead.
It has a lot of practical advice for those who want to have a better relationship with money, whatever your root cause may be. I suppose only time will tell if this works for me, but I feel empowered to tackle my problems now. ...more

What a rip-off.
For starters, apparently the thing about Transcendental Meditation ("TM") is that you supposedly cannot learn it from anyone other than a certified instructor. I don't think that TM by itself is scammy, but the you-have-to-pay-an-instructor thing sure sounds scammy.
Since you're not supposed to learn TM by book, this book is just an overlong brochure for TM and marketing tool for the author where he gets to name-drop a bunch of celebrities and have those celebrities vouch for him and TM.

Katz manages to interview SMG, CC, Nicholas Brendan (!!), and many others. Missing, though, are Alyson Hannigan (who canceled her interview when CC came out with her detailed allegations against Whedon), David Boreanaz (who was a hard "no" from the get-go), and Whedon (who neglected to respond, and who later hit the "self-destruct" button in his NY Mag/Vulture interview).

I was particularly interested in this book because my mother-in-law is a cancer survivor, and her great dane-mastiff helped her through the treatment. (Also, I have always wanted a dog, though my allergies have prevented me from getting one. I am a sucker for dog books.)
This book was an enjoyable and fast Saturday morning read, but I think this book is more for dog lovers than dog lovers and recovering patients. If you're looking for guidance through a serious illness, this book isn't deep or thorough enough.
I loved the author's writing style, but keep in mind that this book is more like a string of well-written blog entries paying tribute to Bijou (the pooch) than a cohesive work with a clear direction. If you're looking for a book for a friend or relative making it through tough medical times, I would suggest referring them to the author's NY Times Well Blog instead:

But where I find books such as Eats, Shoots & Leaves entertaining and not unhelpful, owning more than one book of that type is generally unnecessary (though I own quite a few). Books such as How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy, on the other hand, offer additional genre help and advice regarding writing groups, length of book, etc. Great insights, and I see my husband (who is a budding sci-fi writer) repeatedly refer to its advice....more

What may be appropriate in one context may not be in another--it all depends on what your goals are and how you set up the reader's expectations.
