Quick Rundown: Well, the wedding's off. To quote the Queen Bey, "somethin' aint right" so Chick breaks off her engagement and heads off with her British Roomie to her "home" in England for the summer holiday so she won't have to work with her ex. Home is actually a castle, a bed and breakfast if you will and Chick is anxious to discover that her friend's brother will be in residence as well. It's been 2 years since her and Dude (the brother) had their sex-fest in Atlanta and she's never forgotten. But has he?
Characterization: This was really good. Chick was no Mary Sue though of course, she was way prettier than she thought (so annoying, already) and had very realistic body issues that the author portrayed very accurately. An annoying trait was that she constantly was comparing people (friends, mothers, men) to others in her life. I realize that that is a common trait in one's youth but I stopped obsessively comparing people in middle school because it was quite clear that people are different. Regardless, that trait just got tedious because it overwhelmed her inner monologue for most of the story. I really appreciated the way the author eventually led this character to proper introspection in regards to determining what her issue were but it takes quite a while to get there. Dude was also very interesting and honest in that he was a bit of a dick...but that's just who he was. And even dicks have their own romances, don't they? The relationship between these two MC's felt pretty natural though there is a major communication issue that was just tedious and is so overdone. Secondary characters were pretty well thought out as well. The friends were different and had their own flavor. The mother was a bit of a quandary as the daughter has a love/hate relationship with her but while we felt the "hate", we were only told about the "love" so that was inconsistent and lacking. The Big Bad was disappointing in their response to the MC's relationship but I guess we can't have every character be perfect. And I believe we will be getting that person's book in the series so I'm not sure if I will have much love for them.
Plot: Nothing new here. A bit of a forbidden love, a bit of finding oneself and a bit of friendships between stupid girls. The communication issue was a hugely contrived plot device that really got annoying. My belief was suspended quite often because the Dude couldn't say anything right even though he admitted he wasn't saying it right. Well, fuck! If you know it isn't coming out right then you should be able to rephrase it. And Chick, for god's sake, if he tells you he isn't saying it right, stop reacting and running away before you do understand. Gah, even 3 year olds know when to say, "Why?" and "I don't get it". Okay, enough of that. Sexual Tension was very good and the intimacy between the two MC's was well done. The actual Sexy Times, I don't even remember. They may have been fade to black but the intimacy was there so I wasn't missing it.
Writing: No complaints really except for plot device above. I really appreciated the "voices" of all the British characters. You know how some authors will over compensate with so much British slang? That didn't happen here. I was clearly able to "hear" the accents in the other characters without any excessive use of local terminology. The ending was a bit over the top and unrealistic but at least it wasn't that long. No epilogue but I'm assuming we will get to see these two again in future books.
Overall: Decent read and worth the $2.99 I paid for it. Will be on the lookout for the next in this series....more
This book is terribly contrived but I did enjoy it. I was in the mood for a sweet, YA romance and this fit the bill.
Quick Rundown: Disillusioned/Numb/This book is terribly contrived but I did enjoy it. I was in the mood for a sweet, YA romance and this fit the bill.
Quick Rundown: Disillusioned/Numb/Basketballer Dude is Mr. Popular with the bitchy girlfriend, the talent and status but doesn't care about any of it. Foster/Hidden/Sweet Chick also doesn't care about anything including creating relationships with people. We have the typical Meet Cute, then an insta-connection, issues with friends and family, hard decisions and drama...you know the formula. It's all here as well as a HEA.
Characterization: This was not too bad. We do have a bit more tell than show and Dude is a bit of a Mary Sue but for the most part, the two main characters were interesting and likable. The secondary characters ALL needed lots of work. There's a little brother whose dialogue doesn't match his age. Another brother who is wrongly ignored till the end, perfect foster parents, daddy issues that are never addressed, a mother who magically overcomes her issues just at the right time, etc. I mean, the list goes on and on. Most of the secondary characters felt like they were made up as the author wrote the book to support a plot that also became a bit ridiculous and convenient. There is no Big Bad in this book. It's all about the relationships.
Plot: So much of this felt contrived. There were so many subplots that were enjoyable enough; they were still like a big mashup of every stereotypical YA book drama. There were about 15 subplots and every single one felt like they were just added in as the author was writing. The epilogue is one of those dick moves where the author makes you think one thing and then ten sentences later, you find out she tricked you.
Writing: Not bad but there was a lack of cohesiveness with characterization and lack of focus on plot that reflects poorly on the author's abilities. The dialogue was realistic and enjoyable enough. There was not too much introspection that could get tedious. I just kept feeling like a good editor who could pinpoint areas that needed to be cut or tightened up, adding in moments showing relationships between all the secondary characters, etc could have made this a really great read.
Overall: This was Kindle Unlimited as well as Audible Free Listen. I only listened to a couple chapters and the narrators (male and female) were just mediocre and I ended up going back into reading the book as it was more enjoyable. I recommend if you need a free read, want a nice teen romance and are in a lull waiting for a really great book to come out. There are sequels and I might pick them up or save for a later reading lull....more

But, I have to admit, it was a good book and here's why:
Characterization: This was pretty darn good. The chick was a little bit more tell than show than I usually get from this author and while she wasn't my favorite character, I really appreciate when an author gives the female lead realistic flaws. The Big Bad in this book was predictable and unrealistic- more on that later.
Plot: For the most part, well thought out and I can't think of another book with the same plot/subplots all mixed into one. Dialogue was decent though a bit boring. The ending which one can see from a mile away just wasn't realistic. Slight spoiler alert* No one puts that much money on the line without a signed contract. Especially someone so well versed in their own business and the people they were dealing with.
Writing: Very enjoyable. I will say there was a lack of charm in the dialogue and I never quite fell in love with the characters but I couldn't put it down, so...
Overall: I recommend. Not as good as the Ivy Years series and I'm not sure if the next book is going to be a story I'll be interested in but I'll probably read it while in a slump....more

This one had a different twist, having a "bad guy" be the lead. Of course, he's not really bad but not in a poser way, the author makes him realistically tough that would keep some people thinking he is a bad guy.
One thing that I felt was missing from this book was the Chick's separation from her family. It was only lightly touched on and I thought that was a disservice to the story.

While I love fantasy, I don't read enough of it so what I found new and interesting, could be overly done- check out other reviewers on that point. I gave this series 5 stars because of my overall enjoyment of what this series is. It's a series, written by a devout Christian, with an overall moral theme cloaked in a fantasy book. I tend to hate these types of books because I usually find them preachy and filled with ignorant and harmful ideals. This installment avoided that and gave a good message of chastity that I think any parent, believers or not, would want their kids to read. The characters were well done, the story line was interesting and the world building was pretty great except for a few parts. I never thought I'd review a book as a "good message of chastity" as I don't personally believe in that but I have to be honest- the message was well delivered and not annoying.
Characterization: This was very well done. While some characters came off as goody two shoes, it wasn't so bad as to put me off. A couple characters came of as bland but most of the other characters were very vivid. The Big Bad in this series is portrayed through a woman and it's not till the next 3 book installment in this world that we find the same Big Bad woman representing all women as being inherently evil, and yes, I had a very hard time getting through that installment. But in this 3-parter, the BB wasn't offensive and made sense.
Plot: For me, the plot was pretty interesting. I was captivated and immediately snatched up the other books in the series to see what would happen. The suspense in this series was pretty mild which is actually a bonus for me- I tend to like knowing that everything is going to be okay and heavy suspense is not always enjoyable for me with a stressful real life. But, I don't want boring either, and I wasn't bored here. With that being said, there are some heartfelt surprises in this book that made me cry so it wasn't all fairytales and unicorns as they say.
Writing: Well done. World building for the most part was very good. I had a good sense of the major locals but a map would have come in handy (map provided in the next 3-parter series- Covenant of Muirwood). There were many questions about the society that were ignored- some were answered in the next installment but most were not. Being a YA read, there were many times that the main character had to "figure out" her feelings that were a bit tedious from time to time. But, since this is written for kids who haven't lived enough to automatically know their feelings, I looked past it.
Narration: Very well done but not excellent. The narrator gave it life and most characters had distinctive voices.
Overall: A series I really enjoyed despite the chastity moral of the story. The second installment (Covenant of Muirwood), I should have definitely skipped. The moral of the story is a dangerous one to society, highly offense to the majority of the population and was not cloaked in fantasy as well as this one was. Because of this and that the story itself was not as good as this one, I'm considering this installment a one hit wonder, never to be revisited. This would be a great read for book group discussion- especially for a youth group. Wow, never thought I'd say that about a 5 star read from me, so, well done, author....more

This review is for the series as a whole and overall, it kept my interest enough to stay up reading all three books so I have to bump it up to 4 stars for that. It was touch and go in the first book until about the 30% mark wether or not I would even continue reading but I'm glad I kept reading. I'll do my best not to give any spoilers.
Quick Rundown: Up and Coming Country Music Star Chick has a one night stand with America's Billionaire Business Mogul Dude. He goes to the extreme to get her back in his arms after a one night stand and she concedes to his plan in order to get her out of sticky situation. But if he wants the Chick long term, he'll have to learn about being a "we" instead of a "me". As he's a man, he fucks up a lot but, no worries, you know it all works out in the end.
Characterization: This was pretty poor. I was really being told more about the characters than I actually felt for the characters. The author made an excessive point to turn any random (almost all) thought into country slang. There's a terrible misconception about people from the South. They are portrayed as being 90% Southern and only 10% human. The southern thing gets shoved down ones throat constantly and ends up turning Southerners into a separate species. Characters from California, Ohio, NY, wherever don't get that treatment so why do Southerners? Southerners don't "think" in country slang, they don't eat BBQ or grits every meal nor do they call their mothers "mama" over the age of 10. It would be really nice if non-southerners could get past the accent and stop separating them from the rest of America. Considering all the references to particular country songs, it sounds like the author is a country music lover but maybe she should have done her research and read interview transcripts of her favorite country music stars to see that without the accent, the do actually talk like everyone else. So, the Chick in this series comes off looking like a cliche most of the time and the Dude actually seemed normal. I did enjoy how the couple worked through their issues. The Chicks' anxiety issue was well done but probably should have been broadened a bit more to make it more consistent and believable. The Big Bad in this series was just a joke (revealed in book 3, out of nowhere and completely ludicrous). At least the BB was revealed very late in the series (last couple chapters) so it didn't detract from my enjoyment of most of the series.
Plot: The circumstances between these two characters coming together was new to me but overall the plot was nothing new. Again, the overall ending was ludicrous and really came out of nowhere- maybe a set up for the next series? Sexy times were pretty hot except for the first one with a bottle of whiskey which made no sense, i.e. whiskey dick. Pacing was good and I never felt like any issue the couple had was ridiculous or beaten to death. Epilogue was pleasant.
Overall: Glad I read it and got it off my list. I looked into the second series spin-off but the ending of this one was so stupid (no spoiler but think along the lines of soap opera ridiculous plot twist) that I'm just not interested. Might give it a go next time I'm in a book slump and if a Kindle Unlimited read but won't pay for it....more

Huh. Very lackluster and socially irresponsible installment to the Muirwood world. While I was blown away with the first installment (Legend of MuirwoHuh. Very lackluster and socially irresponsible installment to the Muirwood world. While I was blown away with the first installment (Legend of Muirwood) and it's obvious but not offensive chastity message, this came as a disappointment being a puritanical/extremist retelling of Adam and Eve. That's right. The moral of the story is that women are inherently evil and any evil done by man is influenced or brought on because of woman.
Okay, you might be thinking, "well, she's a non believer, of course she would have problems with anything based in theology". That's not true. I really enjoyed the first, 3 part installment that while veiled in fantasy/mythology was clearly religious in nature. The author did a great job of not forcing anything down the readers throat but still got the message across in a non-offensive way that even hell-bound readers like myself could enjoy. Unfortunately, the message here is not well cloaked, is shoved down the readers throat consistently through the characters and the plot, and along with that, the story itself just isn't as good as the first one was. If it had been as engaging as the first one was, I would have given a higher rating and continued to read on but the quality of the story was such a drop off from the first that I have no hope. And the offense message certainly doesn't help. With all that being said, why did I finish the series? Well, I wanted to know if the author was going to give a different message overall at the end and it just never happened. It did have some interesting parts (mostly to do with the Dude in this one, no surprise there since women are evil) so not a complete waste of time, hence the 3 stars and was a free read for me so no skin off my back.
Personally, I found the persistent negative portrayal of women to be extremely off putting. I'll say it again, it is made very clear throughout all 3 books, that woman is inherently evil and is ALWAYS the downfall of man. Very convenient excuse for men behaving badly, but of course, men wrote most of the bible and in 99% of our world and history have been the storytellers and leaders of society so I shouldn't be surprised but in this day and age... geez, what a douchebag. I'm curious to know if any of the maternally led societies today and yesterday had a history of blaming the male sex as the root of all evil? Or is that just a male thing? Putting that on my "to look up" list. Having attended parochial schools all my life where religion was a class everyday (raised Catholic), even the priests always taught us that Adam and Eve wasn't a true story but just an example of temptation and they never preached that women were inherently evil. It was just a basic story to teach kids the difference between right and wrong and that it could have easily been Adam who was coerced into eating the forbidden fruit. Here we find the ignorant and distorted message aimed directly at the female race that never lets up through the whole series. Small Penis Syndrome at it's finest. I just dare the author to go up to any mother, let alone his own, and tell them they are the root of all evil. Do you say that to your little girl? Or were you "fortunate" enough to only sire good male children?
Characterization: Beyond my issues above, the characterization was good for what they author was trying to say. And again, funnily enough, the male characters are the most interesting (and more honorable when not at the mercy of females) characters. One of the problems with this installment not being as good as the first is that the Chick is not as endearing or likable a MC as in the first book. The Big Bad who represents all women is just so offensive, it's hard to look past that and the fact that the MC Chick is always succumbing to that evil. It's a long time coming for her to become an actual heroine of the story and even then, she's pretty lackluster. There were only a couple of delightful secondary characters in contrast to the many from the first installment of this world.
Plot: Boring and again, steeped in assholery. There were a couple of really great parts but on the whole, the plot was thick in negativity and the pacing was much slower than the first installment. A huge problem for me in this story was that everything the people had worked for in the first installment (2 generations before) was completely lost/destroyed/distorted in this one. After all that damn work the people did in the first book was obliterated so quickly and not only that, but the evil ways/practices just flourished so quickly made no sense to me. I kept reading to find out where the problem in that lay but it was only ever passed off (again) as women being the problem by corrupting the men. That's a lazy and bullshit way of "answering" that question. I kept trying to be fair and set aside my ideals and think, "well, the bad guy can't always be a dude", but the author just keeps shoving it down your throat that women are always rooted in evil.
Overall: Putting aside the female bashing, this series just wasn't as good as the first. The narration was good but even the best narrator couldn't make this story any better. I did have to give it 3 stars instead of 2 because the author does know how to write despite the story itself and there were some good parts. But, I'd skip it unless you revel in your hatred towards women.

Well, it's about the two little darlings from a previous book in the series and it never even occurred to me that I would get their story. So, yeah, stupid! These two characters were just as delightful as they were in their childhood. I listened to the audio book which I do with every Loretta Chase as Kate Reading is just an exceptional narrator.
The author and the narrator really did an amazing job of maintaining who these characters were as children and into adulthood. Not only that, but both gave these characters shared traits from their parents/guardians that we saw in the previous book (not sure which number) while still keeping their individuality. Often times when you read books involving very young characters and then read their own stories later in their lives, they don't remind you very much of who they were as children. This was just not the case here. This book really felt like I had a first hand view of my own nieces and nephews lives so in a way, it felt like home to me.
As is typical for the most part in LC books, the Big Bad is not a hugely dramatic thing and sometimes I enjoy that as I do read mostly to escape and don't often like to dwell on other people's misery. There were some steamy times in this book but less than other LC's in my opinion. Still a great story.
Overall: Highly recommend but you must read the previous book (again, too lazy to look it up) that involves these two characters as children. It's not necessary for the plot but for ultimate enjoyment, do read them in order....more

Other times I just ended up tuning out and thinking about things like laundry. I tried probably about 7 times to finish this book and just couldn't stick with it anymore.
Plot: The pacing was a lot slower than the first book. It was made clear in the book that the main Dude had intentions of doing something with no knowledge nor skill but the problem was that that is exactly what happened. Need to find someone? Boom, they just happened to show up on your doorstep. Again, it was literally made into a joke in the book but many times, these things were what moved the plot along but it still never really moved anywhere except onto another seemingly impossible thing. There is some advancement of a sexual nature for the main Dude but I was unhappy with the choices that were made in that regards-- and not by the homosexual nature, but how that evolved. Of course, that was up until about the 70% mark so keep that in mind.
Characterization: There were some surprises to many of the characters which was enjoyable and the only thing that saved the plot itself for me. Unfortunately, the one character that I loved the most was completely absent up to the point that I read so again, another reason I just completely lost interest.
Narration: As in the first book it was great.

It was free on Kindle Unlimited and low and behold, also free on audible via whisper sync so I listened to the book instead of reading. Like another reviewer, I was on the fence in between 3 and 4 stars but ultimately, it was more of a 3 star read for me.
Plot: This was a bit slow here and there and the second book was even slower however the plot was a bit new for me even having read many paranormals. And it kept me listening. There were some amusing bits but they ended up being overshadowed by Dude's sarcastic whining which just got to be a bit too much and was no longer amusing. This is a M/M book but nothing happens in the first book- it was all about Dude's denial of his sexuality at this point.
Characterization: I thought this was well done. There were times I didn't like Dude very much but that's realistic and I'd rather have that than a cliche. There is more than meets the eye to this main character but I don't think we learn this information till the second book. And while I know this sounds very vague but kudos to the author for this because Dude being just this plain joe schmo makes perfect since. Can't say more for spoilers sake. Older Vampire Dude was a pretty interesting character and more lovable than main Dude. Secondary characters were pretty interesting and get even more developed in the second book.
Writing: This was pretty good but I did have some minor issues. One was physical movements where a conversation is happening and one character is sitting then it turns out he's standing in another room-- that type of thing. Also, there were several times where something significant had happened and it's mention was so brief that I often missed it. This is more likely my issue as I read a lot and very fast but especially in audio format, I blow my nose and then I realize 20 minutes later I was a bit lost. So, I often had to rewind chapters and relisten to see what I missed. Pacing was a tad slow here and there but not too bad in the first book-- it slowed down a lot for me in second book. The dialogue was good as was the world building.
Narration: This was very well done. The male narrator did a great job with all the dudes' voices and a pretty good job with the chicks. Because the narration was so good, I do recommend listening to this book instead of reading.
Overall: A good read that had me immediately picking up the second book, which was not on Kindle Unlimited and I ended up using a credit from Audible on. Unfortunately, I had to return it as you will see in my review of the second book....more

Characterization: I don't have many complaints here. Characters had flaws. There was growth. I didn't absolutely fall in love with them which would have pushed my rating up if I had. The Big Bad here is really the couples finding themselves but the "evil" characters ended up working out all right. Secondary characters were well fleshed out with some that readers will like and some not- so a good mix that added to a realistic book.

Almost as tall as this giant is the Emotionally Repressed Beige Lawyer Chick, who can't stop thinking about Dude and subconsciously keeps him in her life by hiring him to renovate her home. Throw in a cute but fairly charmless child to the mix and complicated gets even more complicated.
Characterization: This was pretty good and almost overdone. The author is very verbose and I often found myself skipping multiple paragraphs of introspection. It was refreshing to have the characters react appropriately- no over the top drama, no misunderstandings, etc. Most secondary characters are from this author's previous series which I haven't read (I don't think) but there was no missing information regarding them. The child could have been much more endearing considering the role he played.
Plot: This was a bit different in some aspects from most books I've read over the past couple years. The Dude's past in combination with his current drama and the way he handled himself, the person he became was not new per say but felt fresh from current trends.
