I didn’t particularly enjoy the first romance, especially the writing style. Usually I do like angsty introspection full of figurative language, but this was� a lot. So much. The second part grabbed me more (drama! houseboat! backstories!), but before I could offer it 3.5 stars in my mind, it led me into a bunch of cathartic crying and reminded me of why I appreciated Alexis Hall in the first place.
Tldr; not my fave Alexis Hall by a long shot, especially in its writing style. Possibly worthwhile if you have a soft spot for a) lovesickness, b) emotionally repressed characters finally feeling things, or c) pierogis (/hj)...more

4.5? IMO the first several chapters were uncomfy to read, albeit important, and so much of the rest of it was eminently readable.
I skimmed part of this book earlier, but returned after Borders of Infinity’s short stories—personally I appreciated the extra depth from that context first, even if I do side-eye certain elements, e.g. re: Taura’s background, consent issues, series-typical transphobic rhetoric etc. (much less in this book). ...more
