A murder mystery with lots of character development and sense of place near Vancouver. I would call it literary with much thoughtful writing and even some humor. Eager to start another of this author’s books, apparently some of his are a current Netflix series. ...more

Then as they woke up a bit for me in the second half the writing format became indirect and confusing with some of the characters being brought up to speed by retelling and herky jerky jumps in multiple timelines and POVs. ...more

I I didn’t expect to like this book I found on Hoopla so much. Definitely a 4.5. I learned so much about Mary Leakey’s life and found it fascinating! I loved all the parts about animals: the wild animals of Africa and their behaviors and the dogs who were pets that were important characters themselves. Most of all I loved the storyline of the sweet cheetah. Mary had quite a bit of life wisdom to impart in this story in addition to all the groundbreaking discoveries she made changing our understanding of evolution and human origins. And as a woman at that! ...more

The different lines of the plot always put the main character central and crucial to their propagation which did feel hard to believe however. I didn’t mind that all the plot lines were not neatly connected or tidied up at the end as in most books I read. ...more

Very different. Liked the chapters with Roya’s POV and Cyrus. Liked reading about an Iranian’s perspective in the United States. Didn’t get into the chapters with hypothetical conversations between characters and historical figures. Several twists made things unbelievable but enjoyable reading for tying up everything at the end. There was no resolution about what a martyr is but certainly raised the question to the reader to think about....more

So much history written in an interesting way to read, so many heroic and heartbreaking things the characters endured, and definitely a sense of time and place in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. However, because of stilted dialogue and flat almost one dimensional characters I felt the book lacked a more emotional impact it could’ve had for me. Maybe due to the length, because I didn’t feel this way during the first half, but after awhile I grew tired of repetitive stubbornness of Suchi and the repetitive pining of Haiwen for Suchi, his violin or his regrets. I was very frustrated with them for never seeing happiness right in front of them. Their constant dissatisfaction with their lives grew old for me as if going through difficult times excused that. I didn’t like either one of them particularly by the end....more
