There I do not like spiders... but I did like Spider, Fat Charlie Nancy's other half. This was an interesting book to pair up with David Copperfield. There was mythology, fraud, debauchery, and weird animal people doing vicious things on a cliff in holes.
Neil Gaiman is a fun writer to read (Don't know why but reading this book reminded me of James P. Othmer's 'The Futurist' even though there really isn't any connection except maybe through the funny characters).
Fat Charlie reminded me a bit of Ignatius J. Reilly from 'The Confederacy of Dunces'... then he didn't. It was a strange moment in my reading.
Fun book... but why, oh why, does the spiders have only 7 legs? What did I miss? I thought spiders had 8 legs. What was Neil doing? Someone please... I can't sleep without knowing. I need answers....more
This book is actually two stories totally unrelated. The cover title and the write-up on the back is misleading.

'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time'is about a girl who leaps through time and it confuses the shit out of her until it's explained to her by a guy who leaps through time... not much more to say.
The second story, 'The Stuff That Nightmares Are Made Of' is about overcoming one's fears... a girl fears Prajna masks and heights and finally figures out why. Her little brother pisses the bed because he's afraid of going to the toilet at night... she figures out why... not much more to say.
It was fun reading but a bit of a let-down....more

I feel Jeffrey Ford has violated my mind. He has penetrated my thoughts and my dreams and created stories from them. My favorite is the titled story 'The Drowned Life'. I've been there. I have gills. The story 'The Dismantled Invention of Fate' is me... I sit and watch people approach but really have nothing to say to them. How can one relate such experiences that are so personal, unique, and sometimes unbelievable? It would be better if they didn't climb the mountain.
This was really an excellent collection of short stories that inspired me and taught me the craft of putting 26 letters together to create dreamscapes, short stories that wedge themselves deep in your head.
I want to grow a deathberry tree and I want to eat the berries.
Thanks again Patty... and thank you Mr Ford. But please in the future stay out of my head....more
