Our main characters are in their thirties, the development of feelings and complications feel realistic, the artwork is gorgeous with soft lines. I'm enjoying getting to know the main characters, and the couple of side characters we have are intriguing as well. There hasn't been a ton in the way of major plot events, but I think that makes sense for the first volume and establishing the characters' relationship dynamics. ...more

I was a bit mixed on the pacing of the relationship between the main character and love interest. I thought the flashbacks were cute, but the level of memory loss surrounding a friendship that seemed pretty intense followed by continual bullying didn't make sense to me, especially since our main character seemed to remember a ton of the details outside of the journal entries. I liked the ending outcome, but did find it was a bit rushed. I think the characters felt very realistic though in terms of their flaws and need for communication. ...more

It kept its comedic tone, but managed to realistically break down the various reactions and grieving of children going through divorce. This one took a closer look at the importance of mental health too, without it feeling overly preachy or pedantic. Huda's reaction at a mental health panel she attends was reminiscent of some of my own moment's of realization of certain inner feelings growing up. I loved seeing the struggles in her relationships, but also the love, understanding, and forgiveness that exists within them. I, as always, look forward to Huda Fahmy's next book. ...more

I think the pacing was pretty good for a first installment, and I'm interested in our two main characters (and the pets!). I did feel like sometimes the expressions in certain panels didn't line up with the emotion the surrounding panels/context seemed to be trying to convey, but that's probably my largest complaint. The world building and explanation of our MC's powers felt clear and intriguing. I also loved the queer inclusivity....more

I did also like the nuance it tried to portray in the various perspectives of religious and queer identities intersecting. I didn't feel the dialogue and pacing of the story was executed in a way I found compelling. I also didn't feel I really got to know the personalities of any of the individual characters well. I did very much like how much history and biblical narratives were included and described through a queer lens, I found it very fun, but it made the story feel more non-fiction-esque. The vibe felt more as if our main character was an "audience" character being narrated to for the sake of instruction. I think the core message and analysis of intersecting identities that seem to oppose each other was a good concept and I appreciated reading about it. I definitely think I'd still recommend it to teen readers, especially any who may be struggling with similar thoughts. ...more

There were some funny/cute parts and a lot of devastating bits that the art did a phenomenal job of depicting the emotions of a scene or character reaction. I think it did a good job of having a fresh perspective, and I never really felt it get predictable. There were points where I realized new directions the story was taking, but I was consistently excited for the next page and interested in what was happening next. I loved that the characters were sometimes majorly flawed but still portrayed as deserving of love and happiness and forgiveness. I went into it expecting a more lighthearted ghost story based on my original reaction to the artwork, but it was a really beautiful look at grief, self-care, accountability, and forgiveness....more

It can be difficult to adapt a classic into a graphic novel, but I think the illustrations captured the tone quite well. I also enjoyed that we had a little behind the scenes section about how our artist worked with the family to make choices that would specifically be faithful to the message and core feelings of the original work. I definitely would give this to a child who may be more hesitant to read classic novels. It's fun, flows easily, and the color story is definitely going to be eyecatching to younger through middle grade kids. ...more

This was a great initial volume, and I appreciated that we got a good vibe of several characters, not just our lead couple. It felt like it was longer than a single volume in terms of feeling like I really got to know everyone and connect with them. The artwork was very cute. So far the vibe is very light-hearted and sweet and the couple's dynamic is reminding me slightly of Kimi ni Todoke which I enjoy. I'm excited to read the next volume....more
