My attention span is nonexistent these days so I went for a collection of short stories, only to wonder if maybe Murakami is at his best when he has an entire novel to get weird. These stories didn鈥檛 do much for me. I can only hope something was lost in translation, but as is, I鈥檓 just not enthralled by reminiscing about the 鈥渨et vagina鈥� of some near-stranger the narrator raw dogged in college.

I would have given this 3 stars and a more nuanced review but then I got to the part where he approaches a woman on her cell phone to ask her what she鈥檚 talking about. He did this as a dare/exercise in experiencing awkwardness. Honey, no. There are so many layers of why a man shouldn鈥檛 do this and it鈥檚 hard to imagine he鈥檚 not aware of them. Instead, his actions stated that his self-improvement was more important than her sense of safety. Context exists. You can choose to ignore it but that doesn鈥檛 make you bold and authentic; it makes you a bit of a jerk.
