Listen, I'll admit it. I'm a bit of an insufferable hipster in that I don't trust booktok hits. In my defense, most of the books I have read from bookListen, I'll admit it. I'm a bit of an insufferable hipster in that I don't trust booktok hits. In my defense, most of the books I have read from booktok were not my cup of tea, and I've never had a specific interest in faeries. But I happened upon a free trial for kindle unlimited, saw this title was available, and figured, "Eh, why not?"
And what do you know......I gobbled this book up faster than a Christmas ham.
First of all, I adore Jude. I tend to have a complicated view on the typical head-strong female heroines, so I'm always wary with main characters as stubborn, hot-headed, and aggressive as Jude. However, Jude quickly proves to be a fascinating and sympathetic character (yes, even with the homicidal urges). Her irrational moments are justified in reason, and her admirable strengths pair stunningly with her weaknesses. For every hateful, spiteful thought she jas about those who have wronged her, she has equally tender and sensitive thoughts for those she loves. Sometimes, those happen to be the same person. She is complicated and strong and flawed and real, and I love her.
Cardan is adorable. Honestly, I love all the characters. INCLUDING the two that many seem to dislike. Yes they did everything readers say they did but i don't care! Everyone is so much fun to read.
Holly Black also has a sparkling wit. Wheyher through mortal bluntness or long-wimded faerie riddles, even in tense moments there are limes that don't feel out of place or distracting. Everything is honestly a delight to read.
And yes the plot is good too but honestly my main focus is the characters. This is high stakes faerie and mortal diplomacy to YOU. To me it is a silly little soap opera.
Anyway 10/10. I should've listened to booktok. Fascinating, fun, engrossing, everything. I'm obsessed. Don't be like me and get on the dang faerie train!!! Choo fricken choo!!!...more

I was hooked on the first part, very charmed by both the leads and found their personal struggles relatable! In the middle it became very trope-y, which kind of became a bit obvious and annoying after a bit, but once our leads got back home, it evened out again. Also, I KNOW miscommunication is an obvious tool in books of this premise, but towards the end I was rolling my eyes at ALL the missed opportunities.
However, I loved the little peeks into Indian culture that this gave me and some of the struggles the leads had. I LOVED the main girl for the most part, a confident idealist and dreamer hiding her insecurities...it just struck a chord with me. Karthik was adorable too. If you're looking for an easy read and a cute little love story, this isn't a bad pick! Overall very happy that i picked it up....more
