Yes, there's a lot of borrowed concepts from other fantasy books and the romance is cringey at times but somehow it works. Curious now to see how the second book plays out....more

Maybe it was the thing itself. Just being there, together. Two little girls who knew what nobody else knew-how not to ask questions. How to believe what had to be believed. There was politeness in that reluctance and generosity as well. Is your mother sick too? No, she dances all night. Oh-and an understanding nod."
This was yet another remarkable read by Toni Morrison, a short story examining race and preconceived biases. Highly recommended....more
I love Muriel Spark's writing. I'll probably keep reading more of her work but I just didn't get the point of this story. I liked the main character, I love Muriel Spark's writing. I'll probably keep reading more of her work but I just didn't get the point of this story. I liked the main character, Mrs Hawkins; her little pieces of advice about life and her quirky personality. She gets fired twice because she won't stop calling a bad writer a 'pisseur de copie'-this part was a bit funny. The cast of neighbours at the place she was staying at didn't add much to the story maybe Wanda and William but as a whole didn't feel necessary....more

The other two characters don't come up as much-though they each have an important role to play which you realise towards the end of the book. Rev Hightower's monologue/vision is a recount of the past where Faulkner examines the history/attitudes of the South starting from the American Civil War using the Reverend's family. It was a very obscure chapter but I think very crucial in understanding this story and the birth of Lena's baby symbolizes hope for the future. Though not one of his popular books, I enjoyed reading it....more

The fact that her characters are plain and fall in love based on the qualities the other posseses is also commendable in a world of fiction where most books always choose to use attractive characters.
Jane the protagonist is also always portrayed as a strong independent woman who despite what she faces, always made rational decisions which I imagine had a big impact for the women of her time. In my opinion the first half was really good, the second half not so much-I think I wasn't a big fan of Jane's cousin's storyline....more

The emblem of the flag of this new republic would have been half a yellow sun-hence the title of the book. She does a great job bringing out the atrocities of this war and though her characters are among the privileged in the society, the war does not spare them....more
