Yes, this has all of the makings of a horror story with a spooky house on a hill and dark family secrets, but it also delves into much deeper topics such as white supremacy and eugenics (a horror story in and of itself).
I’ve heard a lot of people say that this novel was scary with disgusting details but I didn’t find that to be the case at all. This is an atmospheric slow burn that oozes creepiness without using disturbing descriptions or plot points just for shock value. By the end of the book, I felt entirely immersed in High Place. I’m not usually one to enjoy overly atmospheric writing, but it lent itself so well to this story.
In terms of the characters, they were all well-written and relevant to the story. Noemi, the main character, was strong and brave but also knew exactly when to back down and keep her cards close to her chest. It’s impossible not to root for her but I will say this - if someone tells you to leave the creepy af house that you’re staying in, you should listen!...more
