This deserved more of a slow burn or at least some time to build a relationship for these characters in particular, but that didn't happen. And it seemed VERY out of character how quickly they hooked up. And just one little note about the guy. When he started talking about his "social battery" being low, his hotness dropped massively. It was so fucking lame for a grown Slovenian assassin to even use that terminology.
Unfortunately, this first-in-series book is just a way to highlight the "Alliance" and all the secondary characters because they'll have their own books. The last 25% felt like a very long epilogue and it dragged. I kept wondering where it was going, what was gonna happen. It went nowhere, nothing happened---except more about the Alliance. Very disappointing. ...more

Honestly I was hoping Rayne would become his new love interest in the second book, but NOPE! Still Paige. And Oliver took her back way too easily IMO. Other negatives were things like lots of typos and a messy plot. And the revenge wasn't as grand as i hoped it would be. Oliver didn't plan out his master plan very well SMH. But I guess it doesn't matter because in this town you can kill and maim and there's no such thing as homicide detectives or trials.
Side note: when I downloaded this from Kindle, it listed the author as "Ana Storm." And the whole time I was reading it, I kept thinking this has to be a man writing this because the vibes were totally masculine. Any soft moments between the characters were completely skipped over and the focus was a lot on how hot and horny Paige was for Oliver, but in a very porny way LOL. I'm thinking I might be correct if the real author is "Z.S. Storm. "...more

At times I was so frustrated with him. I can't imagine Paige was so hot you would welcome being a doormat to such a bitch, but I guess you gotta be a 17 year old boy to understand....more

If you missed that note, don't worry because he'll tell you every other paragraph. At some points, I was thinking where the hell are the adults because these guys act like irrational boys. It was a fun read though. Some people call this a "dark" romance and I suppose it is, but for me I think this mafia world the author created is so OTT that it's hard to take the characters too seriously. I really liked Serifina and loved that she held her own against Remo. Ending was sweet....more

It takI read this because a favorite author of mine said this was one of her favorites. And I'm so glad i did because this book was epic and amazing. It takes you on a journey that is so vivid, I know this will stick with me for a long time. It's a very long book, and it completely consumed my life for almost a week. Sleep, work, and meals were all inconveniences. And when I was done with this book, I felt mentally exhausted, but it still left me wanting more. I wasn't ready to leave Meoraq and Amber.
I see some people giving this less stars solely because of the violence and that's something I never understand on goodreads. For me, if it's quality writing and a good story, that's what counts. The violence is a big part of the plot, so how can you expect the author to tone it down just so that people can feel good reading it? How can you truly horrify a reader if you gloss over the bad stuff? It's all part of the reading experience. Makes no sense to me.
The way religion is weaved through this story reminded me of an author I used to read as a young teen. Anyone out there remember Christopher Pike? I don't know how well his books hold up nowadays, but they've always had a piece of my heart. Anyway, the writing here reminds me a little of him. Things people/creatures say or do, pay attention because a lot of it comes back throughout the story. I love when authors do that. This was a really great book....more

An entertaining read, but WAY overhyped as a "dark romance." Why are people painting this out to be some grand romance??? This wasn't a romance. There's a love story---sure, but the big focus is on the whodunnit, and that's what kept me reading. The romance was a meet-cute, a few flirty text messages and then they bang. After that, they're coupled up and that happens fairly quickly. Every few chapters they sleep together, but nothing interesting as far as their relationship. You're mainly just wondering what he'll do when/if he finds out.
The first book started strong. Lana seemed smart and capable in a reasonable way. However around the time they couple up, shit started going off the rails to the point of complete disbelief. Even small things like: how did Logan walk into Lana's house--not once, but twice-- and surprise her??? A serial killer forgets to lock her front door? Gimme a break ...more

Two reasons this didn't get 4 or 5 stars. #1 was the repetition and #2 was because of a big editing error. You know how books have trigger warnings at the start? How about a trigger warning for bad editing and typos? That's one that would be useful to me.
I think maybe the author didn't know where to go with these characters and so there's just paragraphs and paragraphs of the same dialogue said in different ways. You have to skim through all that to get to the meat of the story, but there IS a really sweet story in there. Just sadly not much to it.
There was a big error regarding a phone that I don't understand how it got passed everyone. It plays a pivotal role in an event. At one point Noelle loses her phone and then later it's miraculously back in her purse so she can call someone, then it goes back to being missing again. I had to go back and reread it several times to make sure I wasn't crazy.
I'm actually excited for one of the secondary character's books, but looks like it won't be book #2, so hopefully book #3 will be Riley....more
