I loved the idea of naming the chapters after Bible verses and telling the author’s life in a semibiographical was as though she is rewriting the Bible. Unfortunately I think it fell short of what it was aiming to be.
The fables were a great idea but in practice this book is convoluted and messy, it’s hard to tell when reality is starting and stopping. I wish there was just one fable continuing throughout the novel instead of multiple. They are written quite beautifully, unfortunately they aren’t incorporated well.
It’s also very hard to tell what is really happening in reality due to the writing being so vague. Time jumps in such an odd way with no sign posting, it almost feels like a collection of jotted down thoughts rather than a coherent novel.
There are so many interesting concepts in this book that are touched on and then abandoned, I wanted to know more!...more

It was lovely, very interesting and the vibes were immaculate. It’s niche in a way that I really love, where you learn more about the cultures, time periods and interests of the characters in a fun, easy way.
My biggest criticism is that it’s a bit slow and really not very much happens for a lot of the book. I also found the timeline/time jumps a bit odd and disjointed. I had to keep referring back to other chapters to see how all the mixed up events were related.

The premise is a bit odd, whose ex-girlfriend is setting a guy up with her friend? It doesn’t make sense, not even for the character, but oh well, I can get over it. I do agree with all the reviews that say the whole character of Pen should have just been cut and the relationship should have started a different way.
The plot is interesting, I like the exploration of mental health the main characters are well developed. Some of the dialogue is a bit cringe, but it’s not a deal breaker. This book wasn’t as kinky as advertised but the spice was there. A decent read, but Check & Mate and Bride remain my favourites. ...more

The trailing off of sentences in the middle of speech is so fricken lazy and annoying. Massive show don’t tell problems in this book.
Such a slog to get through. I don’t think I’ll be readying any more of this series. ...more

The premise is slightly more original in terms of world building and magic than some others that I have read which is a big plus because a lot of them are starting to blur together. Very typical romantasy enemies-to-lovers trope with your typical trope accompaniments, but done fairly well. Altogether it’s not super original but it gets the job done well.
The story moves fast and keeps you engaged, with some fun twists that I definitely didn’t see coming. If I had one compliant it would be that everything comes together a bit too neatly at the end regarding villans. It’s a bit unrealistic even for a novel with thousand year old Faeries.
I also felt the very last bit of the book to be unnecessary and complicate the storyline and worldbuilding a bit too much (tree scene if you’ve read it). ...more

Perhaps because I read this after the Once Upon A Broken Heart series it felt like the world building wasn’t really fleshed out enough and you weren’t really emersed in the story like you are in OUABH. It certainly felt like a debut novel.
Still it’s an interesting concept, if slightly overdone, with good twists and turns. It kept you guessing and wanting to read on. I would be keen to read the rest of the series, because really you can’t judge a book until you read it in context. ...more

I like the magic system and unique setting in this book, it makes it interesting to read and sets it a part from a lot of books in the Romantasy genre which has become very homogenous. That said the actual romantic plot and the main characters are fairly standard, not to say they weren’t good. This book fell flat in terms of foreshadowing and intrigue- it’s very very obvious what is going to happen throughout this book and I think if it was written better it could have been a lot more mysterious. ...more

Anyway the book is fine, gets better toward the end but it is kind of whiplashy how the tone of this book changes and the drama unfolds. Anyway, not for me. Am I the asshole? Honestly. Why was I begging for this to be over?...more

All the choices the author made seem consistent with a selfish character - including an absolute absence of any interesting character or side plots or going into any one else’s emotions - which is smart writing but makes this a kind of boring read.
It might be a good read for someone else but it’s not for me. ...more
