Like other readers, my interest waned with the detailed political discussions of the time, thereafter skimming and focusing on the myriad details of writing THE book. Holy smokes! What a lot of work and research that was. I abandoned ship about two-thirds through after the minutiae of the book became a little boring and more explicit details of their lives were revealed, making me feel like a peeping tom at the window. ...more

The book is intriguing, insightful, and mostly interesting. I found the various stages of his kitchen slavedom both fascinating and instructional. Where Mr. Buford loses me is in some of the history, in particular, when the egg and pasta became such close companions. Page after page of speculation, wonder, and research does not make for good reading.
What does make for good reading are the tantalizing meals (I'm making the peposo as I type - smells heavenly!), insights about good quality meat, the trips to Italy, and all the children posing as adult chefs and butchers. What a fascinating and motley crew they are! ...more
