A big, old-fashioned novel that, as it lurched towards its inexorable ending, initially left me speechless. I have now recovered enough that I can offer a few thoughts: Orringer remains an excellent writer of description and dialogue, and her depiction of wartime Europe is full of texture. ("the flat blond light of Budapest in winter, falling indifferently through the tall windows...") She handles completely different scenes and moods, like a Parisian cocktail party and an argument in a frozen labor camp, with such equal skill that it very convincingly draws together the two scenes as parts of one man's life.Maus is blisteringly direct. Both bring the experience of Holocaust victims and survivors alive by putting the war in the context of prewar lives and hopes. The amount of detail lavished on Klara and Andras's life in Paris makes it all too easy to see how they could hold two ideas--wariness and plans for the future--in their minds at the same time. Orringer also gives the reader insight into the unique position of Hungary during WWII, where Jews were able to live in relative freedom until late in the war.
