Some of them are pretty creepy, something fun to read when your home alone one night, but most just didn't cut it for me. Some were just weird and I'm still trying to figure out what's supposed to be scary about them, and others are laughably stupid. One actually tries to make you scared of deer--DEER. I mean I give the author credit for their effort and creativity, but seriously... I'd have to say that my favorite by far was "collect call" and its sequel "The Black Walker". Admittedly it was pretty predictable and some parts were stupid, but it was one of the creepier ones. I would also recommend "The Doll", "House of Horrors", and "The Spell". While I didn't find it very creepy I do give kudos to A. Bates for "Deathflash" which is probably one of the most creative stories I have ever read. Oh, and I think "Lucinda" was a pretty good one as well. ...more

It's definitely intended for younger kids, but it's still good all the same. Similar to another of Jerry Spinelli's books, Stargirl, it tells young readers that they don't have to give in to peer pressure. If they don't feel something is right, they need to voice their opinion. This is an important idea to instill at a young age in preparation for teenage-hood, kids need to know that they don't have to follow the crowd, even if it seems as if they're the only one. ...more

Jerry Spinelli has a very unique style of writing and in my experience he writes from the heart. This book has the wonderful message of being yourself and not being afraid to break free of the crowd. He also tells his readers to step outside yourself enough to notice people and care for them. Another life lesson that I got from it: do not allow yourself to live in regret. Get out of your comfort zone and live every moment to the fullest. I know from my review, it may sound kind of cheesy, but this book is really good and very relate-able. It actually does a pretty good job of describing the usual high school body--them, a mass all essentially the same, too self-conscious to set themselves apart, and the heartbreak that comes from the cruelty of some kids. I didn't realize until after I discussed this book with my class that I was like the narrator, so self-conscious I was shying away from anything different, trying to get my crazy friends to blend in with me. Now I know it's more fun to be my true self: a complete and total dork, and proud of it! This book has definitely made a difference in my life. ...more

This book creates a whole futuristic world, another classic seemingly utopia/actual distopia sci fi, which is intriguing for every age boy or girl. This book actually deters shallow thinking and encourages people to "not be a follower" as my geography teacher says. There is much more action than you might suspect and it only get's more suspenseful as the series goes on. READ IT. ...more

The movie made absolutelyMy brother recommended that I read this book when the movie came out. "The book's better," he said and in many ways I agree. The movie made absolutely no sense (what was with the freakin butterflies?!!), the creatures were some sort of zombies instead of vampires, and there was no connection to the title at all. The book, however, made a heck of a lot more sense, went into great detail about the "vampirus" that had plagued the majority of the population, and at the end, guess what, you find out why it's called I Am Legend. Admittedly I did enjoy the movie, but there were so many edge of your seat suspenseful moments that were in the book that were missing in the movie. The vampires in the book also knew exactly what they were doing and did everything they could to try to get to Robert. There's also much more of that sense of loss in the book as his ex-best friend is constantly tormenting him and screaming "Come out Neville!" and his wife and daughter die much more brutally. Anyway, long story short, READ THE BOOK, IT'S BETTER THAN THE MOVIE.

The first time I saw the cover of this book it was like love at first sight, and unlike some books, it lived up to my high expectations. It's easy to read, but the characters are so lovable and complicated and the storyline so intense, that you would hardly notice. Besides, it is from the point of view of a fifteen year old girl and her character really shines through. It is pretty thick, but I flew through this like Max and her friends. It had a lot of dark humor, lightening the mood of the mental institution. I was hooked until the very end, following the protagonists current journey in the mental institution and the friends she makes there and her gripping past which eventually reveals why she is there. It was pretty shocking, and sad, but ends on a light note and gives you the feeling that she can finally move on. I would recommend it. ...more

I didn't particularly like the movie. How I imagined it from the book was way cooler! Harry Potter is just awesome. It's almost like it's several different genres: fantasy, horror, romance, and comedy all perfectly blended to make an amazing series. These books really captured my imagination as a child and still make me laugh and keep me on the edge of my seat when I reread them. J.K. Rowling is a genius. I don't know how she does it. :D...more

I found it sufficiently creepy and I really liked the character of Simon. However there was a lot of Simon telling his history--in one sitting at that--and I don't know, it would have been more interesting if it had come out some other way, like bits and pieces throughout. But hey, maybe that's just me. Overall I was very pleased with this book, even if the ending saddened me. ...more

I mean sure there was some intense parts, but overall there was very little action and it had too much "mature content" for my liking. Being a horror fan, I was also disappointed that the baby wasn't evil, but maybe that's because I'm remembering Angel--my first vampire love. I have been a vampire fan long before this series came out and I guess I just felt this book really didn't do my fav mythical creature justice. Yeah, that sounds harsh.
