I couldn't tell you. I have many. Not heaps, but a few. A small collection of books that I put high above all the others. I probably add another book to this top shelf collection once a year... And that's if I'm lucky. And this book now sits on that shelf. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING. Saying "it's a work of art" fully undersells it. I absolutely adored every single page of this novel. Why? I can't even begin to tell you, just... Just everything. What's it about? Everything and nothing at once. This is a love child of "The Secret History", "Catcher In The Rye" and "A Little Life". Paul Auster was born to write. I almost passed out from happiness when I found out he's written over 15 OTHER NOVELS. Hello new TBR. 900 MILLION STARS....more

The way this iBefore this book, I knew Nirvana (who doesn't). Thought I knew Kurt too. But this. CHANGED THE GAME. Best BEST biography I have ever read. The way this is written is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE, it feels like Charles Cross captured the essence of Kurt Cobain, bottled it and wrote this book in its ink. This isn't a shrine to Kurt Cobain, like I thought it would be. All tumblr girls losing their minds on how Kurt just "gets them". This is... Real. I felt like Kurt was a friend and when this book ended, I felt like I had lost him. A trillion times amazing, I wish I could forget I ever read this so I could go and read it all over again. Even my stone heart was moved....more

THANK YOU TO MY KIND FRIEND WHO RECOMMENDED THIS TO ME, YOU HAVE CHANGED THE READING GAME.
I can't put a sentence together eloquentUm, Holy Sh*t, Wow.
THANK YOU TO MY KIND FRIEND WHO RECOMMENDED THIS TO ME, YOU HAVE CHANGED THE READING GAME.
I can't put a sentence together eloquently enough to describe the beauty that is this book. Its a story, within a story, within a cemetery of forgotten books and I can't help but feel like this book was written by a book lover, for book lovers.
It has the most wonderful storyline, plot and characters, but somehow it is almost poetry too (I couldn't stop annotating and underlining beautiful poetic phrases and descriptions right down to the very last page.)
I think the best way to describe this is "A mystery of an author, a bookstore assistant and a library of lies... with the added beauty of writing very similar to Markus Zusak in The Book Thief and probably one of the best books you will ever have the pleasure of reading"

Thankyou, Catherynne Valente, for making my childhood love of fairytales a new adult obsession... I got a third of the way through this book and went to buy all the others in this series.
I love EVERYTHING: September, Ell, Saturday, ugh and I love how Catherynne put a new spin on the fairytale style of story - instead of making it a far off place that only exists in my imagination, she gave it tastes and smells and colours that makes this (very logical) adult think that possibly, fairyland is a real place.
UGHHH I LOVE THIS TOO MUCH. I'd give it 6 stars if possible.

Maybe it's because I love Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf that I also instantly loved Susanna because she reminded me of a modern day version of them. "Girl, Interrupted" is a true story of a girl that found the line between reality and the somewhat blurred world of the mentally ill, and skipped across that line - journal in hand. I loved that her thoughts are written almost in a diary-esque format because though they are spasmodic, somewhat delusional and a bit confusing... Somehow, between the cracks they hold a truth to them.
"Boyfriends and Literature: How can you make a life out those two things? As it turns out, I did - more literature than boyfriends lately, but I guess you can't have everything" S.Kaysen
Somehow she made borderline personality disorder witty. Somehow she made it relatable. And most importantly, somehow, she made it understandable.
