It’s perfectly creepy, perfectly criminal and just the amount of darkness that gives you goosebumps on the back of your neck. A quote from this book sums this up perfectly:
I have no idea why this was so HARD to get into or care about, it seemed to be written well and was a super dark crime and miscarriage of justice so. This book reminds me so much of that film “crash where every small story overlaps someone else’s until they’re all connected and almost everyone is damaged and hurt in a massive way. DO NOT read this book if you aren’t looking for an emotional roller coaster. Be prepared to feel every colour of the emotional rainbow and have your heart hammering in your chest the whole time. But, as it turns out this was more focused on Irish folklore and more of a coming-of-age story than anything else. It was still rather gripping and entertaining but because I wanted to hear all about the murder and didn’t care much for the back story, this was more of a hit and miss for me.,...more

I think if I wasn’t a mum, I’d think this woman was draining and stupid and such a complainer. But being a mother of a 9 month old, this struck a cord because I remember ALL TOO WELL the sleepless nights, the forgetfulness of baby brain, and everyone telling you you’re “doing such a good job when you feel like you’re falling apart. The “whodunnit was crappy, the sister in law/protagonist relationship was unbelievable and the whole story was pretty fricking weird but you know what? Who cares because we’re in isolation and I have all the time in the world to read soapy books and it’s kinda nice for my brain to take a vacation from itself and read a trashy thriller like this. I mean, is not gonna win a Booker, but it’s not bad. ...more
I put this book down twice and only slogged my way thIs it really plot twist if the twist is insane?
** SPOILERS AHEAD **
I put this book down twice and only slogged my way through it because the reviews on goodreads all rave about it. I don’t understand what hold this book had on everyone because the whole time I wanted to hit the main character on the head with a fry pan. And HOW. LONG. Can. You. Draw. Out. Situations. There were countless times that I found myself thinking “ok ok I get it you’re at the gym and have been for the last 2 pages ughhhh.
Her mother having munchausen-by-proxy was definitely the most obvious “twist and the revealing of that was laughable. Suddenly Alice just “knew and stormed in on her mother, ranting and raving. Discovering Mr Interested was her father... yawn, it was like the author meshed coronation street with a horror film. Don’t even get me started on Brenda and her cutting. That just came out of no where, for no real reason except to bring some blood into the mix. Her real father coaxing two girls to stab her so he could “save her was literally the cherry on top to the WTF-ness of this book.
Basically, everything about this novel storyline-wise was a shambles.
For the first 200 pages this book was destined for me not to like it but I’m glad I plodded on, because, it was super gory (which I loved) and totally insane.
For a personal preference of a book, I’d give this 2 stars but as far as psycho thriller books go, this was just ok for me so three stars seems adequate. ...more

After she had sex with the musician in the cinema, I decided I couldn’t go on. I love Camille Läckberg’s crime novels and I was so excited to try this psycho-female-revenge novel that when it didn’t quite hit home, it disappointed me far more than it should have. Faye is a weakling and I couldn’t stand her continued whining about Jack not loving her enough... only for her to shag the first guy that txts her. It’s not fitting the domestically-abused-wife aesthetic for me. I could get over that if it was just Faye that was off but the whole book (or the part I could wade though) was like that and I might be in quarantine but I’m not that desperate. Yet. ...more

This is elegant, beautiful, and utterly tragic all at once. What’s it about? A man’s life. It’s about everything and nothing at all. Why’s it so good? The way this is written is a work of art, I lingered on every phrase and held the words in my mouth like tasting a fine wine. This is what books dream of being when they grow up. ...more

I guess I expected to swept into a world where real life mysteries got solved and literature reigned supreme.. but in a more magical sense (like the cemetery of forgotten books from SOTW). No, this was not the best either. ...more
