I stuck this one out because it has many positive reviews including a couple of friends of mine (who I used to, but no longer trust, as guides in what I should read).
This book is not even 'beach read' light. It's just garbage. Poorly written and put together I'm shocked that anyone got through it, let alone the hoards of fans who are clamoring for more. Jeesh. At least I guess I should be happy that people are reading books? That's a positive.
Finlay's inner dialogue has the maturity level of a 13 year old. Her insecurities read middle school, not professional, educated, married/divorced adult with parenting experience. Most everyone in the story is hot, like the book was written as a script for a bad Hallmark tv movie. Detective Nick wants to protect F and her family so he takes her out driving to stalk/stakeout a mafia boss? Fancy Teresa has plastic blinds on her bedroom windows and she doesn't notice dirty sneakers in her pristine front hallway? Nothing about the details of the story make any sense at all.
I barely feel that it's fair for me to write about this book. I’m the ultimate unreliable narrator. I don’t remember what happened at the beginning. WI barely feel that it's fair for me to write about this book. I’m the ultimate unreliable narrator. I don’t remember what happened at the beginning. What the heck was the “Sex and the City Problem?? I can’t look it up because I listened to the audiobook. Listening as opposed to reading iis a whole other problem. I know that I miss stuff. I know that I miss nuance. And I know I should read. But it’s a matter of finding the energy to sit still. So I continue to listen with the plan to read more, always just around the corner.
I didn’t LOVE it but I loved parts of it. Read it, don't listen to it because you’re going to want to go back to sections. And you might want to skip over some. There were some bits that reminded me that I wasn’t a gender studies major nor did I want to be. I learned a lot, but plenty went over my head and just wasn’t that interesting. But the story itself is good stuff. The characters are real and new to me. And it’s really well written. There was a lot of information. Facts. The stuff that nonfiction is made of. But I never felt that Peters had an agenda (unlike many informative fiction writers that use the story to string all their research together... yes... i'm talking about Kristen Blagh Hannah). I felt she had a lot of information about a lot of different topics and she was able to weave it together in a story that would have stood up even without the factual bits.
