Well, as the first Vonnegut I've read, it certainly stands up and dares you to read more of his books (erections and all).

I don't often find this kind of thing funny or endearing, but what I liked were the sudden moments of perfect setup allowing him to slide casually into a masterful observation of humanity, like you wouldn't even notice it.
Of course, that's what it seems he's known for, so if the other stories he's written feature less incest, fewer orgies/erections, way less race stuff and stereotypes to cringe at... maybe I'll read some more. Not in a super hurry to, though, I'll be honest.
In truth I rolled my eyes and shuddered my way through a lot of this because much of that "I'm an SF hippy dude who just wandered into having kids but didn't think I'd need to actually act like family to them DESPITE THE PREMISE OF THE ENTIRE BOOK" thing is so overdone by now and becomes tiring once you recognize it. The thing is, it would be such a cool story if it weren't so freaking boring. So much exposition in the dialog, SO MANY convenient people popping up just to tell the characters a piece of info. So many paragraphs where I'm utterly confused, and that's all before page 100!
Why do all the ladies' love stories have to be so poorly written? Can't we have just one? That's a bit harsh, I know, and I don't mean the scorn. It's just I'm surprised this kind of thing gets published today. It's like reading a D&D campaign where the DM hasn't described a single landmark, plus oh a queen is there at some points. If you're into this book, go all in. But if you liked A Song of Ice and Fire and are believing the hype here, PotOT is nothing like ASoIaF in terms of dialog, or character development, or really just story organization and plotting. Steer away....more
