A really large amount of research went into this creation and according to the author's note, it has simmered for 20 years, wanting to be written. As a retired nurse, I had no trouble identifying with Ruth, the main character, a labor and delivery nurse. The only African/American on staff. When a white supreme patient demanded that she not touch his wife or newborn, she was reassigned by her supervisor. This after 20 years of working in this position. Later when an emergency with the infant arrises and Ruth is alone with the child she must make a decision. No spoilers from me. What ensues is a legal battle and the white public defender takes her case. Picoult neatly enters racial issues and new understanding between Ruth and her lawyer. And we also learn more deeply about how the Supremeists operate behind the scenes....more
