Now, we did get to keep going with the first plot but I wanted this to just be a murder mystery tbh. I wanted the characters to realize on their own that they were in a super messed up situation, do a murder, have it go badly and have all of them be various shades of messed up as they're trying to do their work. It's frustrating to introduce a whole thing about another society halfway through and make it about them because I don't care about that! I want what the book originally was telling me it was. I was looking for a nice quick read to close out the year, and this sure got the job done! The plot was very interesting, which was apparently more than enough to make up for the fact that I was not at all attached to any of the main characters. Despite the fact that I had predicted where the story was going and also then the twist, there were still plenty of surprises along the way, which I really appreciated. Everything stacked very neatly together. This book moved and it moved fast. Plus, it managed to talk about the reality of violence against women in a way that was honest and to the point, (the author presented a lot of 'period typical' violence this way) and was still very respectful and genuinely felt pretty authentic most of the time. Some of it made me bristle a bit, but we did actually get to have women talk about how they felt about the whole thing instead of just hearing about the men's feelings and that was so refreshing. Anyways I definitely recommend this one....more

It's like if a regency era fairytale asked the question what if the prince was a huge dick and that's a great question to ask. The answer is that he gets hotter. There is SO much going on in this book I think it's nothing short of a miracle that Atwater pulled it together into a cohesive whole. Everything is interesting and nothing feels out of place.
I think Atwater did a fantastic job of giving the reader information about the norms and expectations of regency society through the protagonists inner monologue without making it feel like clunky ass exposition. It felt natural and it was extremely helpful!
I also really loved Albert, Elias and Dora just like immediately. Like the characterizations here were so good and even the secondary and tertiary characters felt like people. God I just loved this book so much...more

I also like that the author pretty much immediately pounded a big sign into the dirt that says here there be queers.
