My religion has a course called Finding Strength in the Lord: Emotional Resilience, which covers most of the same principles. There were some anecdotes I didn’t find helpful, but most everything was relevant and useful. She addresses the readers as “Mama Bear,� which is my only complaint about the book.

I chose to read this book to have something sweet and uplifting to survive dark winter months. The book is really wholesome but not so sweet as to be insipid. By today’s standards Anne is an unrealistic book heroine, but still, I would like to believe a beloved girl like her with very few trials could have existed in a small town in Canada a hundred years ago. Montgomery writes in such a romantic way as to make all the world a magical place with stunning views. Anne is so loved and such a good creature that I think many modern readers are likely to be annoyed, but it was just what I needed and I’m grateful Montgomery adds humors and little adventures that aren’t too stressful.
