Although it centers on a very important topic, OCD, the majority of the book just felt very unbelievable to me. OCD is a very crippling disease and despite being a world within itself, much of the stuff Pearl suddenly did just didn't make sense. I think the message is very important and it was very entertaining experiencing the world alongside her, but I have a hard time believing that patterns that have been with you for over a decade can be changed just because you meet some random dude....more

I was actually pleasantly surprised with this one. I thought I had it all figured out but it turns out support groups can be for more than just overcoming trauma. This is my first read by Darren O'Sullivan and I can't really complain. You meet characters learning to live again and figure out who they are and who they can be despite everything they had to go through. How finding people who understand you can give you the extra push you need.
I feel like the second half of the book didn't quite match the beginning of the story, but it kept me hooked to find out how it would end....more

This one had a lot of potential and the premise was very intriguing, which was what made me request the book. Sadly, it didn't deliver what was promised.
The question on the cover was what sold me, but I wasn't really sold as I was reading the book. I found it to be very predictable, and I figured out pretty much the whole plot by the first few chapters, which made the entire reading experience a bittersweet one. The side characters were interesting enough to want to keep reading but the main characters left a lot to be desired. I didn't feel the pull between Reza and the love interest, and it all felt very rushed just to fulfill a certain point in the story.
This would make a very interesting TV adaptation, but it lacked depth on the page....more

Don't get me wrong, I loved reading about the Eights, their friendships and hardships that shaped them into who they were, and the historical part of the book was greatly portrayed, but it seems like there was some story left to tell?
I would still suggest this as a cozy read for someone thinking about picking up this book, but I feel like we stopped right in the middle of the most important part. An interesting debut novel, nonetheless....more

The characters were so uninteresting I didn't even root for any of them. The only remotely interesting thing about this book was The Bridge and its students. I couldn't care less about Bryony and Jack was an awful person. His actions weren't justifiable, no matter the meaning behind them, and I can't even begin to comprehend how Bryony forgave him. I was cringing hard during the whole grand-gesture portion of the story, which was very unbelievable, even for a romance book.
During the entirety of The Perfect Rom-Com I felt like we were given a version of Amelia's first book and were left waiting for the Bryony's version of it....more

I have to admit that I found it funny that this is targeted towards YA but had a lot of gory details, which I don't typically associate with the genre. The world-building was interesting and easy to follow but given the number of pages the book has, I wish we would've seen more aspects of the story instead of just being told about it. One example I can think of is Deka's love interest.
On the other hand, I enjoyed the alaki side characters as they brought more personality to the whole scenario. I was also pleasantly surprised with the last chapters. I thought it was headed one way but it turns out Forna had it all planned so we wouldn't guess it.
Something tells me that the Gilded Ones are not 100% what they seem so I can't wait to find out more....more
