It's super unrealistic (insta-love anyone?), but I wasn't reading it for any kind of profound life-altering experience - I literally just wanted an easy book I could listen to to wind down from a long week. This book absolutely fit that bill for me! It's super low-stakes and easy solutions were perfect for an easy escape from reality. ...more

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who loves them. I like the show, I love the gossip column of Lady Whistledown - she is entertaining and snarky. I also love reading Regency-era romances because everything is so scandalous. That being said, I dislike the men of this era so much, and Julia Quinn has really developed unlikeable male protagonists. I just don't like Anthony at all, and to be honest, I didn't care much for Kate either. There was a lot of forced prejudice and while I can appreciate the fact that Julia Quinn seems to have really done her research, I still dislike her main characters at a basic level. I think this is my last Bridgerton book. ...more

It was like a recipe book with stories tied to the the recipes, but that went together to form one long story. I really enjoyed the magical realism in the story, and I felt like it fit and flowed really well as part of it. The depictions of familial abuse did bother me a bit, but that was part of what made the story impactful. Overall a good read. ...more

This is a combination of Divergent, How to Train Your Dragon, and Shadow and Bone. Add in some spicy scenes, and age up the characters to adults, and you have this book. So, basically adult fantasy, but reads almost like a YA fantasy. It was a fun read, and the Spanish-themed world was cool. The things that brought it down were the repetitive phrases like "unhinged my jaw," and the constantly talking about how "hot" a guy was. There was little to no real character development, and most of Violet's transformations are off screen. TBH, the book was a little bit contrived and definitely a bodice-ripper disguised as a fantasy book. In a book this long, the repetitions were a little...irksome. The writing was alright, although there were definitely places that I rolled my eyes more than a little. However, for what it was, the story itself was exciting and fun and I plan on continuing the series....more

This was a cute book. It was cozy and light, with very low stakes. Some of the reviews have pointed out that this was written for a teenaged audience, and I would probably agree - it is definitely a great book for teens, and even older children, especially those who want to enter into the world of fantasy, but are not quite ready for the really high stakes and/or long series for high fantasy novels. For myself, I really liked Viv, and I wanted her to do well. The premise of her coffee shop was cute, and I loved to read about the different races - especially the Rattkin baker and the Dire Cat. The relationship she had with Tandri was sweet, and I liked the slow burn and the emphasis on true feelings over lust. I also loved the idea of the college and the possibilities. For me, I would love to see more of this world, with Legends and Lattes Coffee Shop as a part of the world for bigger adventure stories. While it was nice to have what would have been considered a background place take front and center, I would love to see more of this world through adventures. ...more

I have seen this book compared to The Fault in Our Stars in some reviews, due to its topic of teens with terminal diseases. I have not read The Fault in Our Stars, but I do understand the premise. Honestly, I'm just going to go with the idea that they are of a similar genre, with a similar premise because that was what was in when it was written. This is the second Nicola Yoon book I have read, the first being The Sun is Also a Star, and as far as teen romances go, it was another all-around fun and quick read. For how serious the subject matter is (we have mental illness, terminal physical illness, as well as physical and emotional abuse), I felt like the story was pretty light. I took me one evening and the next morning to finish the book, and really that was about 2.5 hours total, so it went really fast. I enjoyed it, and it was engrossing. I definitely wanted to know how things progressed and (view spoiler)[ whether Maddy got sick when she left home for Hawaii. (hide spoiler)] Everything, Everything was written with a teen audience in mind, and Nicola Yoon did a great job writing for her audience. While that audience was not me, I did enjoy the ride, and I definitely would recommend it to those who enjoy modern teen literature....more
