The true originality comes with the concept of Expendables, and it brings up all sorts of questions (for the reader to consider, not on the page) regarding sentience and personhood and all the squishy stuff in between. Presented in an enjoyable format.

There are typos and grammar errors (some, not a lot) and there are places where the story doesn't seem to flow as well as I would like but then in later panels the story becomes clearer.
This is essentially a graphic take on Hades and Persephone, done as a sweet love story, with all the Olympians and Titans and such being just as dysfunctional as the mythology suggests.

I enjoyed the author's Lightening Conjurer series, more than I expected to. I came into this series hoping for the same wonderful and exciting approach but with adult characters. I wanted to like it. I don't.
The truth is my discontent is only regarding two tropes:
1. The FMC is too stupid to live, embodying all the characteristics of a female I abhor. Emotional over reaction to the point of absurdity, used as a pacing device. Kill me now.
2. The author has adopted hooks and hangers for endings and I'm over it.
I marked book 3 as tabled4cliffhangers thinking I would come back to it after the series was complete but naaa. I'm over it. It's a pity because I really enjoyed everything g else about this series. It's even hilarious that the Jewish mother is a banshee and the mc has banshee and harpy lineage (which SHOULD explain the emotional over reactions but I just CAN'T).
If you don't mind women who should be strong and intelligent and self sufficient suddenly turning into squeeling bints at every crisis then this is the series for you.

Competent start to a series that feels like it wants to be a PI story but isn't (which is a good thing). I liked it well enough to want to listen to more of them and see how the story develops. The ending to this was a bit of a hook but I'm not upset about it. Perhaps because there are so many more of them ready to go. We will see if the trend persists....more

There were things I found very frustrating about this series, but overall it is well done, action packed, easy to get invested in the characters, and the last book was a good wrap to the series.
Most of my issues were tropes I don't care for and a couple of places where the solution was so obvious it was the one that was eventually used but the characters took too damned long to get there leaving it feel like service to word count more than to the story.
It's a NA series that's more story than romance, the romance is very slow burn and most of it is fade to black, the love triangle is mild and only slightly annoying (mostly because it's not a true triangle and more an unrequited situation), and there is a lesbian couple who have a prominent secondary role. There is also a lot of real science thrown in here and there. The rock hounds will love it
It was good but seemed like a first effort in spots. It did leave me excited to read her adult series that begins with Inked.
Rener has a lot of potential and no small amount of here and present talent for story telling. I'm excited to see how she grows as an author....more

I heard a lot of effusive things about this author and this series in particular. Admittedly I was a bit reluctant because of the young adult branding/buzz. But when I asked further questions some didn't agree with the YA label and I suppose here at the end of book 1 neither do I.
This is New Adult although it's a very slow burn, clean New Adult. The MCs are in their twenties and, for the most part, respond to situations the way you would expect people in early adulthood to respond.
Rener has done a great job of making the female MC relatable although I feel tepidly about the "hero." I am willing to be convinced over time. I have to say there was a poorly timed kiss that I didn't find believable at all, but sometimes you can't have everything.
The world is as much a character as the characters. I can't say that I think it was completely flushed out in this installment as it left a lot of questions to be answered, but it did make itself known as an ugly bitch of a place with megalomaniacs insisting they are authorities in abundance. So it promises to be interesting and probably more than a little emotionally evocative.

The only reason that I ranked down from four for this was personal preference. I didn't really care for the male MC as much as I expected I would. He The only reason that I ranked down from four for this was personal preference. I didn't really care for the male MC as much as I expected I would. He started out a bit too much the asshole for me and I never warmed up to him much, but I'm a hard sell on redemption.
Still a really good story that advanced the long arc. These are linked in that there is a long story arc, but each book features one couple like you expect from a romance series. The long arcs are every bit as good as the relationship stuff, and this author does a wonderful job of balancing the relationship drama with the overall story. In fairness, I prefer the overall stories to the romances, with just a touch of heat but not enough to bore me into flipping through it, so this sort of romance is right up my alley....more
