It's also the last book to be narrated by Elena as the final three books in the series will be from Savannah's POV. So (save for a few shorts) this is a goodbye to Elena, Clay and The Pack. And a great parting it was.
In Frostbitten Elena and Clay travel to Alaska to look for misbehaving mutts. Meanwhile Elena is struggling with issues from her past and she's facing new daunting prospects.
I always love it when Elena narrates the story. She is the perfect mixture of cool confidence and vulnerability. I love how she carries herself and I adore her dynamic with the ever intriguing Clay. There are times where I wished for the two of them to talk more (and engage in some foreplay), but recently I accepted it was just their way. Until this book. Elena's narrating has never been so honest. She is more vocal about her doubts an insecurities. And about her feelings for Clay. There is actual telling and talking and explaining in stead of just doing (each other) which was great to see. Elena has not only mellowed over the years, she seems to have emotionally matured.
All in all, the character development and the relationship aspect was wonderfully done. This book was headed for a 5 star rating, had it not been for the last part.
After the, in my opinion, quite silly plot in Broken, I wasn't expecting much from the action plot this time around. I was pleasantly surprised. The action kept me on the edge of my seat, the events were intricately weaved with Elena's personal battles, plus we got to know some new, interesting characters. I was engrossed until 80% of the book. After that point the plot became a mixture of B-action movie meets Neverending Story. The train scene was way over the top. I know Elena acknowledged it herself by commenting on it being very movie-like, but still I thought it was unnecessary. The (view spoiler)[ shifter story line also fell in the 'too much- category. (hide spoiler)] Which is a pity because Armstrong doesn't need grand gestures, over the top events or (any more) fantastical occurrences to leave an impression.
All in all, save for some minor issues, Frostbitten was a worthy goodbye to Elena and her Pack. A 4+ rating. ...more
3,5 stars Succubus Heat is the fourth installment in the Georgina Kincaid series. Because of her constant sulking state after her break up with Seth, Georgina is sent to Canada to investigate a satanic cult which seems to be embarrasing the demon world. In the mean time she has to spy on the region's arch demon Cedric. But... there are other powers at work and Georgina soon gets caught up in much bigger trouble. There is an up side to it all, though, as Georgina and her friends loose their pow... abilities. This means Georgina can actually have sex without taking one's life energy. And since Georgina still loves Seth...
This book was another fun read by Richelle Mead. After years of obligatory reading of study books had put me off reading all together, her book Succubus Blues was one of the first books I started reading again. Mead's fast, straight forward way of narrating, together with the witty dialogues, had me sold. After reading a lot more though, that simple straight forward way of Mead sort of is a bit... young adult-ish. Even though I hate over descriptive stories, I felt that Mead could sometimes be a bit more elaborate in her ways of story telling. On the other hand though: that's not her style. What Richelle Mead does best however is make us love Georgina. The girl is a succubus, works for hell, steals people's life energy, but still: we feel for her! The Seth angst is high in this book and I thought it was well worked out.
*SPOILERS* Good news though: Roman is back! I'm expecting more Roman+Georgina hotness in the next book. Though I think the fact that Seth will be the HEA is pretty much overly clear... *End Spoilers*
All in all a fun read by Richelle Mead. I'm looking forward to the next book. ...more
Kim Harrison does it again. Just when you think you're actually starting to like Rachel, Harrison turns her into a TSTL whining little girl who seems Kim Harrison does it again. Just when you think you're actually starting to like Rachel, Harrison turns her into a TSTL whining little girl who seems to be deliberately getting in the biggest trouble possible. All in the mean time while trying to get in the pants of everybody in a radius of 50 miles. And when I say everybody, I mean e-ve-ry-body. Male, female, married, single, big, small, witch, werewolf, vampire...it doens't matter people: Rachel doesn't discriminate. What she does is irritate. The next book gets better though. ...more
3,5 stars I must say this book was the best in the Hollows series I've read so far (4 more to go).
I like the Hollows series. It's funny, entertaining 3,5 stars I must say this book was the best in the Hollows series I've read so far (4 more to go).
I like the Hollows series. It's funny, entertaining and exciting. I like Rachel, even though she likes to make things much harder for herself than they need to be. But still... in a strange way I can't fully connect with the books. Where with Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherwold series I was really drawn to the characters and with Karen Chance's Cassie series I literally had to force myself to put the books down (and God, do I love Pritkin!) with these series it's just not happening. Maybe it's because plotwise there's a constant speed shifting going on. Sometimes not much happens and then a lot will happen in a short period. And so a major fight might be over in 4 pages but deciding what to wear for a party might take up 5.
This book was more character driven which I liked. It made me like Rachel better, I loved Ceri (the first 10 pages of the books were hilarious) and adored Jenks. Ivy could get more page time but I'm guessing there's a reason she stays a certain mystery (and Rachel's feelings for her). Nick might have as wel stayed away.
*SPOILER FOR UPCOMING BOOKS*
I like Kisten but I think his behavioural changes towards Rachel (dangerous-> luring sexy-> totally in love and sweet) were kind of... sudden. I cheated and read the book covers over later books and know of Kisten's upcoming fate. But I must say: all the better cause Im hoping he'll clear the the way for Trent! I love Trent. He might be bad (although to him the end justifies the means) but he's sexy and strong and, in his own way, witty and just.
*END SPOILER*
Really curious about the next installments. ...more
