This is a long book at over 400 pages but it does not feel like it. The pacing is perfect flipping between different points of view. From the first page you are invested in the characters. Acclaimed and applauded for his heroic saving of a baby from a house fire, Steve goes from hero to zero in a matter of chapters. You the reader know something is wrong but you can't work it out or why Steve is so reticent in acceptance of his hero status. As the plot unfolds you are left as stunned as are the now divided members of the small knit community where the book is set. The reasons are surprising, though understandable, but absolutely nothing prepared me for the twist at the end. Nature over nurture? You decide. I can't recommend this enough. A truly excellent read....more

I'm a huge fan of this series, but this is not just another great, engrossing read. In my opinion, it is probably the best instalment in the Erika Foster series yet. There are so many what-the-hell! moments. Firstly in the course of an investigation Erika, and you the reader, are floored when she comes face to face with her old nemesis, the person who is responsible for her traumatic past and the murder of not only her colleagues but her husband too. If that isn't enough the one person from her past who has her back, to whom she shares her past and whom she can turn to, delivers the ultimate betrayal. As the story of Erika鈥檚 past unfolded I was concerned that the author was wrapping things up and we might not hear from Erika again so I was thrilled and relieved to read that is not the case. I can't wait to catch up with her and the rest of the characters and see what lies ahead for them. As always the author delivers a brilliant and truly unputdownable read. ...more

It鈥檚 all about the main plot this time when a friend of Nikki鈥檚 finds human remains in a house he has just bought. An engrossing twisty turny tale then unravels. Meanwhile two other cases simmer along and suddenly links are made, secrets uncovered and a legacy of abusive uncovered. There is not much development in the subplot this time, but that said it鈥檚 lovely to catch up with the cast of characters that have come to feel like friends....more

This is a multilayered read: a fabulous main plot, a nice subplot with lots more to offer and a great backstory of how Stilwell is exiled to this 鈥榖ackwater鈥. All human emotions are here and skillfully interwoven into the narrative. There are no surprise cameos from our beloved Bosch, Ballard, or Mickey Haller, but there is a nice nod to something that happens in a previous novel that did make me smile. Another outstanding read from this master storyteller. No one could ever replace my affection for Harry Bosch but I was delighted to hear Michael say we will be hearing more from Stilwell and I鈥檓 already looking forward to it. ...more

Number 5 in the Colter Shaw series and my favourite so far. Its a family affair this time as Colter is called by his sister Dorion to help with a flooded river levee that threatens a small California town. Their mother Mary Dove is also in attendance as another sinister plot is unfolding at home too. All is not as it seems, and so unfold lots of plots and intrigue both at the site of the flood and within the Shaw family subplot too. As usual the author takes you on a merry go round of possible culprits and motives and there are a wonderful cast of characters to enjoy along the way. Another belter of a good read from this bestselling author....more

Don't be fooled, though, by the pretty covers. While these are feel-good reads, they also cover serious subjects and act as Irish history lessons. I was particularly struck by Hannah鈥檚 polio story, as my father was also a victim of the Irish polio outbreak of that time. Wonderful relatable characters and switching between two timelines, this excellent read will keep you gripped, and if you've read the previous books in the series, you'll enjoy reaquainting yourself with some of the other characters in the series too. I really can't wait to revisit Roone Bay and see whats in store for them all again in the future. ...more

All the rest of the Fleury women are here too and its like catching up with old friends. This book works perfectly well as a standalone read, but I urge you to read the previous books to get the most out of the history of the family, and I envy you the binge-read. As before the plot is predictable and all the more enjoyable because of it. Another wonderful hug of a book and I'm feeling bereft now I've finished it.
